Lav use within your ticketed cabin
We have all heard it before. Yesterday flying UA 919 lhr-iad I was in 17C in economy plus. God forbid if someone from this cabin attempted to walk into the C section of the plane and use the lav there as you would face embarrasment and be "sent back" (as has happened to me before) however, I noticed throughout the flight C passengers coming back into the Y cabin to use the lav. Should one really care? Do you care?

What would really be embarassing is if an FA ESCORTED the C class pax to the front of the line for the Y class lav and then apologetically WAITED outside for them to finish. Even better if they periodically knocked on the door and asked "Is everything ok in there?" or better still "What are you up to in there?"

I flew SFO-HNL earlier this month Nov 14 and there were many times throughout the flight where the up front passengers would come through our Y+ cabin to use the lavatories.
Same for HNL-LAX flight .. same thing happened as well. I even observed Y+ passengers using the up front lavatories as well at times throughout the flight.
Sanosuke!

Flying from LGW on Sunday, the Delta FA made a very articulate announcement about how people should only use the lavs in their designated classes. He made the point of saying that not only can Y pax not use the lav in C, but that C pax absolutely can't use the lavs in Y. I guess it has been a problem for them. I've never heard such a strict announcement before.

You're in the right to give anyone grief for using a lav not in their section no matter if its a downgrade or an upgrade so to speak. Being up front doesn't mean you own the plane. That said, you're unlikely to see an FA, without someone pushing them on the issue, calling someone from first class on going to the economy lavatories. They wouldn't risk the complaint for something minor.

The aircraft I see those up front moving backwards a lot on is the 757. Particularly when the FAs do the 'upturned cart and sandbag' routine for the flight crew to use the front lav.
That lav between 2L and F is sort of 'fair game' for both parties though it does fall behind the curtain.

Yep on a SEA-DEN 757 flight Saturday the FA were telling F Cabin to use the lav in coach when they had it blocked for the flight crew.
It was a "dinner" flight, we got the cold cheese and fruit platter only and the crew got a hot meal, not fair.

Most of my DL flights are on MD80's or 737's and when there's a cart in the aisle in Coach, the FA's almost never stop coach from coming forward to the FC lav. On longer flights the FC FA will usually tell any coach pax that come forward and stand in FC to move to the rear lav's. I think they want to avoid having anyone other than FC pax standing up front in the event the crew rings them and tells them they are coming out to use the lav, they can tell the FC pax waiting on the lav to return to their seats for the time being, which I've seen done.

when you gotta go
They still make the same stern announcments but in the last year I have rarely seen any one challenged about moving up a cabin to use the lav. The only exception to this has been trans Atlantic where they seem more sensitive to that.

Flew ATL - LGW 7 Nov and LGW - ATL 14 Nov (763). No mention of using lav in ticketed class ATL - LGW, however, from LGW - ATL pilot was very explicit about using lav in class where you were seated, stating it was FAA, HSD (and TSA?) directive. I saw one Y pax sent back by a BE FA while the BE FAs said nothing to a number of BE paxs who walked back to the Y lavs. I understand the need to take care of those who pay the most but imposing usage restrictions with a ratio of 1 - 12 for 36 BE paxs and 1 - 41 for 165 Y paxs and not enforcing those restrictions seems absurd.
On an earlier domestic AA flight I watched as a soldier, in uniform returning from Iraq, who was sitting in the front of Y be sent back by a F FA. There were more than a dozen people waiting for the Y lavs and both F lavs were empty.

Haha! I'm all for sticking to your assigned head but as I always say on long road trips... using the restroom is the one excuse I never question, espcially when you're on a 5+ hour flight with only 2 heads for a few hundred people in coach. I've seen people having rough days who had to switch cabins for ... quicker access... never saw any of them get denied after explaining their... sense of urgency.

I tend to meander a lot (I'm a meanderthal) during flights... on a widebody I'll do laps, or if there's a midships galley, figure-eights. Even if I'm in biz, I'll get to the back of the plane. Heck, I'd walk back and forth on the wings if it weren't for the wind.
I'll use Y lavs as a biz/first pax only if there are no lines at all and I'm back there as part of my meanderings.
