I'd have to say United with the rhapsody in blue.
I don't think i've ever seen US Air commercials, or NW or CO for that matter. American has some.
I just saw a Korean Air commercial today.
Granted, i'm talking about commercials and not necessarily branding, but in my eyes they go together. i'm not in the biz though.

The SouthWest centred behind the scenes TV series is regularly shown on British Digital channels. This has generated millions of dollars of pblicity over here. Granted, many of the people who watch it might never fly SoythWest, but marketing is marketing.

I'll have to say CO even though I'm a DL junkie. I'm not exposed to them in my home market - ATL but they appear to have a very good reputation with thier faithful. I can also recall reading several postive articles about CO in newspapers and other publications over the past several years. From what I've heard and read they have an excellent product in terms of service, fleet, employees, ect. Considering the past 8 or 10 years have been the dark ages for the LLCs, I think CO has come thru pretty well.

I'd say that AA, UA, Delta, and Southwest are well ahead of the other in terms of brand awareness. In unaided recall - "name a US-based airline" - I suspect they would be well ahead of the others. CO and NW at a second tier. US below that, and the other LCC's at the bottom.

I just moved to DC from PHL and WN was far more recognizable in PHL than US was.
WN's television marketing is really quite something. For every market they go DIRECTLY after the enfranchised carrier (US in PHL) or after the traditional modes of transportation (i.e. driving the PA Turnpike between PHL and PIT vs. flying WN). I've been in many different markets and have seem customized commercials in everyone. Quite something!

This question really has two answers -- U.S. and non-U.S. residents.
Internationally, I'd guess United or American -- hopefully some non-U.S. FTers can give us their impressions.
Inside the U.S., I'd say Southwest or Jet Blue.

In the UK I think Easyjet it is a lot stronger than Ryanair. Easyjet was the first true low cost carrier (in the UK) and Stelios got a lot of publicity early on. Ryanair gets a fair amount of publicity hardly any of it seems to be good.

It's better known in Spain (and Greece!) too.
Contender for strongest brand for an American Airline I would have thought was PanAm. That the airline doesn't exist anymore just proves my point.
