overbooking

I recently read an article in the NYT about overbooking. It stated that one factor that increases your chance of being involuntarily bumped from an overbooked flight is late check-in. Just wondering: if this is true, then does Internet check-in and printing of boarding pass 12-24hrs before departure make it less likely to be bumped?

thanks
Ken

On most airlines I am familiar with, early on-line check-in will reduce the risk of an involuntary denied boarding.

In theory, yes. In practice, I've been IDB'ed twice and both times I attempted OLCI the day before and received "Receive seat at gate" responses. So I was able to clear security without a seat assignment, and then I was IDB'ed.

Still, it can't hurt to OLCI early.

I've never been IDB'd due to overbooking once I had a seat assignment

I've been IDB'd when there was an equipment change (to a smaller plane) or flight cancellation, but never for overbooking. I have gotten the message that I couldn't get a seat assignment when I tried to OLCI, once or twice but then I called reservations, and since this was on UA, where I'm a 1P, the reservations person did some sort of override, and gave me a seat assignment. If your carrier can't give you a seat assignment 24-2 hours before your flight, that's NOT a good sign.

A few KLM staff have told me that, in their case, that is true, and that it is always worth checking in online for that reason even if you end up checking in a bag. To add to that (touch wood) I have never been bumped from a KLM flight despite having taken 31 of them since January, always checking in online (mainly to get first pick on seats).
