A few KLM staff have told me that, in their case, that is true, and that it is always worth checking in online for that reason even if you end up checking in a bag. To add to that (touch wood) I have never been bumped from a KLM flight despite having taken 31 of them since January, always checking in online (mainly to get first pick on seats).
