I'm going to try it, not on this upcoming trip, because I'm going on a cruise and need to bring formal wear and girlie stuff so I have to check a bag anyway, but I was thinking about it and I definitely can on my next trip.

I can survive with whatever shampoo, conditioner and lotion that my hotel is willing to supply me with, solid deodorant is legal, I always carry a travel size Dove soap which is fine for face washing for me, and my toothpaste is prescription and therefore I should be able to carry it aboard. (bonus Tip- you can shave pretty well with hair conditioner.)

I have a small vial of perfume that can ride in a pocket or, um, the cleavage pocket, and I'm thinking of subverting one of my hubby's contact lens cases- one side should hold a few applications worth of facial moisturizer and another can hold a dollop of styling creme. I can throw it in a pocket or in the carryon. If they open it, I suppose I'm busted, but I don't think they will.

I figure I'll throw in a travel pack of baby wipes for makeup removal, and I wear mineral makeup, which comes in powder form, so no problems there.

I might be one of the weird women out there who is actually low maintenance enough to get away with this, though. And having the prescription toothpaste definitely helps this plan work, I'd think.

I've quit shaving, quit using deodorant and quit brushing my teeth.
Problem solved.

I suspect it would be much harder for women to solve this problem as most makeup is probably impossible to carry on and it may be hard to find solid replacements that would work.

As a man, I've solved all of the problems but one.

Shaving soap instead of shaving cream.
Tooth powder instead of toothpaste.
Solid deoderant (I'd already been using this).
Shampoo from the hotel (though Lush has solid shampoos, but I haven't tried them).

But, I'm a bit stymied on hair gel. My hair gets awfully wavy without it and I'm not ready for the buzz cut. One poster suggesting using a Lush solid conditioner as a har gel. I'm going to try but I'm not confident.

Ahem, if only it was so simple... Or if the silly ban was just lifted.

Seriously though, I am 2 for 2 on carrying a couple banned items on.

Gel deodorant and toothpaste.

Both are trial size so no biggie if they are found and taken.
I don't use shaving cream, I feel more like a man when I dry shave. And I don't use shampoo / conditioner as the hair on my head was polite enough to all fall out just about the same time as when I lost all my vanity.

I don't know if I will keep up with the "civil disobedience" or not... I usually just go with how I feel when I am packing.

I'm afraid that wouldn't work for me. Since blood is a liquid, thus banned, showing up at the airport for the morning return flight bloodied from shaving dry could present a problem.

I've not tried it (yet), but just a little warning -- one of the ladies in the Women's Forum tried one of the shampoo bars (though a different brand) and it took her *days* to get the stuff out of her hair. Apply lightly until you figure out the right amount or you may never see a wave again.

I've had pretty good luck with Lush bars. It's not soap so don't go crazy with it. It foams up very very fast. Two circles over average length men's hair is enough. Add more as needed.

I leave all of my toiletries in the drawer of my desk at the client site on Friday and take it to the hotel with me on Monday.

When I have to travel outside of my normal weekly routine I'll have to figure something else out.

Great post - I was flying LGA - IND last week and couldn't figure out how all those people had roller bags and didn't check them.

Now I know - Fedex!

How the heck are you folks making it through security with prohibited items? I travel fairly often and 9 times out of 10 I am "randomly" selected for further screening. Lately it has been a little better in that I'm selected on the way out but not on the way back home.

The only thing I can think of is that I always travel at the last minute. I don't remember the last time I made a reservation even seven days in advance.

The main thing I wanted to say here is this...You can buy prepaid DHL envelopes for around $10-12 and then ship items to the hotel. The prepaid price even includes pickup. It is a GREAT buy. I'm pretty sure that a woman's make-up would fit in an evelope even though it isn't flat. Just use some bubble wrap.

I have been super annoyed that hotels have not started putting toothpaste in the rooms lately. I'm going to start putting a request on my reservation to see if that eliminates the hassle of having to request it and wait for someone to bring it to me.

Toothpaste: baking soda and a fluoride mouthwash
Hair gel: I use the lotion in the room; it works fine
Shaving cream: it took a while, but I now have a concoction that works better than regular shaving cream. (i) You will need a bar of soap, hair conditioner or bath gel and lotion; (ii) apply hot water to the face; (iii) soap the face and let it set for under a minute; (iv) put hot water on your hands, followed by conditioner/bath gel and rub into the face/bristle; (v) apply the lotion to your face (don't let this concoction get in your eyes or mouth ; (vi) with hot water running, shave as usual. I have found it works better and gives a superior shave to commercial products.

Why not use the USPS $8 flat rate boxes? Those include free pick-up as well and would fit women's cosmetics.

Last time I went with 2-day USPS priority mail both directions, $6 each way. ^

No problems at all but I don't think it would be cost effective just to ship toothpaste and shave gel which are the only banned items that I really need, esp. as hotel front desks are not known for very good handling of guest packages. So I think I am going to simply pocket the toothpaste next time, and maybe forego shaving for a day...
