Hummm...tough question with so many possibilities.
I think I'd have to go with the following:
1) Vancouver - very scenic, great food, interesting mix of people
2) Santa Fe - unique look on the great American Southwest
3) San Fran - for all the reasons stated in so many responses before
4) Washington D.C. - history, politics, food, meet your congressional leaders
5) New York - has it all!....but pricey

Colorado Springs is pretty nice, but the traffic is not. Great scenery, hiking, variety of foods, parks, music, historical sites, etc.
Kansas City area and Lawrence KS: GREAT food, beautiful, lots of fountains in KC, major sports teams, great shopping. Lawrence has a great downtown with lots of unique shops and restaurants. It reminds me of my home, Sioux Falls.
I would like to be the first to nominate Sioux Falls, SD: very laid back atmosphere, friendly people, great Native American culture, art and events, the Big Sioux River falls and dells, quartzite quarries, beautiful farmland, county fairs, the RibFest, rodeos, just to name a few.
go ahead, laugh all you like . But it won't cost you much to have a good time there... and if you happen to score an invitation to dinner with a farm family, be prepared for some good home cooking! If you're lucky it will be steak!

I'm down with Sioux Falls. Spent three days there a couple of years ago and liked it very much. Good, cheap golf there, too.
I also like Lawrence quite a bit, too.

I love the cities of San Francisco, Chicago, New York, San Diego and Las Vegas in this order.
Both to visit and live.
SFO is a perfect place, nice weather year round (jogging is possible there with short sleeves in January, but I don't know if that was only good luck ;-))

I wasn't particularly fond of it, but I see where you're coming from.

I fly there at least 25 times a year for purely personal travel. That's when I realized it would be much cheaper for me if I just lived there.
Of course, that doesn't mean I won't be back home in the YYZ for visits

Well, I live in Chicago and that's a given.
I am surprised that I have three BC cities on my list, all for different reasons...
1. San Diego - The only place in the US where I would seriously consider moving full-time;
2. Vancouver - I love the Asian influence and the neighborhoods;
3. Washington DC - Underrated weekend place, a little sightseeing, a little food, some good bars, repeat. Only thing is that I am not fond of DC hotels;
4. Victoria BC - Unfortunately, it's often cheaper for me to get to LHR than to YYJ.
5. Hiawatha National Forest, Michigan UP - The small towns are a hoot and it's incredibly quiet; and
6. Kelowna BC - Excellent golf, an interesting business/entertainment district, friendly people, and Tim Horton's donuts for breakfast.
