I had the same problem arriving in Jakarta last year. I paid a local guy to escort me through just in case. I don't know if he made any difference or not, as they slapped the visa on the last page without any comment, but I sure was nervous the entire way over that I'd be in limbo waiting for the next flight out of there.

South Africa: 1/2 page

I was in South Africa last year and was aware of the same admonishment to keep 2 pages free.

In actuality, they ended up using the space of about 1/2 page for a sticker that is posted in the passport. That was that.
