My #1 vote goes to Cairo. Perhaps the most god-awful place a tourist could ever go to. With Tel Aviv and Tunis not far behind.

I think the problem here is that some people are confusing what this thread is supposed to be about. Ponce is not overrate, because most people have never even heard of it. Toronto is not overrated because it is not a "rated" city in most peoples books.

^^ - although I don't know that that is the case with Toronto. But, I agree that the thread is not for the purpose of trashing podunks that no one ever heard of, nor places like Detroit that appear on no one's list of rated cities.

Toronto is quite overrated. There is literally nothing to do there besides the CN Tower.....

There is literally nothing to see except the CN Tower? Is the rest of the city invisible? That sounds really interesting, and perhaps shows the city to underrated.

Newark is a close second.

In terms of being overrated?

All right, it didnt quite make it as one of the new 7 wonders of the modern world, but arent the Sydney Opera House one of the most recognisable (and architecturally stunning) building in the world ?

The trouble with some tourists coming from countries with a relatively short history, is that anywhere lacking in ancient buildings or grand museums is deemed boring and not worthy of a visit.

For the rest of us, we rate a city based on a combination of sights, setting, food, weather and friendliness of the people.

Please.........Atlanta is hardly ever "rated", so its pretty hard for it to be overrated.

Its a great place to live and work, but it really isn't a tourist destination.

Sometimes I even think is the coke factory even worthy of a tourist attraction? Nonetheless I love the landscaping rfreeways of Atlanta. :)

As one who lives in Toronto, it's a great place to live and work. But definately something I would not consider to be a city filled as a tourist mecca. Sure we've got the CN, the islands, Paramount Wonderland (even though it is not 12 months/yr) but other than that it's a place where people come to make money and not to spend money as a tourist. So yes it is not one I would consider a "rated" city.

Yes, it's scenic, but whoever came up with that slogan has obviously never been to Rio, Hong Kong or San Francisco or many other places that outshine it both in scenery and in variety of interesting things to do and see. The beaches they tout are all rocky and the water is ice cold, even in summer. All in all, I found it very ho-hum compared to the buildup.

What?? Cape Town is not overrated,

Many of my friends from Atlanta bill it as the southern capital of the US, offering great food, culture and sightseeing. I go there, and it's just BLAH.

I think it's been getting the biling of "Capital of the South" for quite some time now - that would seem like it's rated pretty highly....no?

LOS ANGELES - what an awful pit - the only thing to do there is leaving!!!!

My vote goes to Rio. Once you've seen the bay from atop the mountain (looking right over one of the world's worst slums) you can go home, unless you're there for Carnival, which is worth seeing once, but so much trouble you won't bother a second time. The architecture within the city is basically 60's tacky and the "world famous beaches" are crowed with a lot of people you won't want to hang out with. If you want nice beaches in a big city go to LA!

As one who once lived in Toronto and left with no regrets, I have to agree with your assessment that "it's a place where people come to make money". To me, it was a completely boring place to live, except for places like the zoo (most wonderful zoo in Canada), the islands, the Scarborough bluffs, the beaches, Queen street, the World's Biggest Bookstore, etc.

I don't think I could live there, but I enjoy going back for a few days at a time...

Funny, you don't like Rio, I don't like LA.

You like LA, I like Rio. Apparently, we won't meet in life ;)
