Add my city, Cerritos, CA, to the list. Don't bother coming here unless you want to see a truly modern 3-story family library with an excellent children's section, a reknown performing arts center and a truly diversified community of 51,000 people living in a great suburb of southeastern Los Angeles county where the average house now sells for over $700,000. If you do come, you can always book a room at our 203-room Sheraton, but don't tell them srk123 sent you.

I was once passing through Cerritos... and I just kept going, and going and going...

Yes, the performing arts center there is really, REALLY REALLY nice... but I don't think i would go out of my way to see your 3 story library...

Well...

Los Angeles.
I don't see ANYTHING great about it.

Las Vegas.
Noisy, smelly, drunk, and uncivilized.
I feel sorry for all the decent people that come to the city.

I'll have to think about Paris.

I find most of the "cities of the future" to be absolute let downs, Dubai, Singapore and Shanghai top the list. Yes these cities often have great air connections, yes they have some great hotels, and yes they have lots of sexy new infrastructure and shopping malls, however the are generally devoid of any character whatsoever (and kep in mind that I have been to all of them more than a dozen times!).

As for Vegas, I would say that it is one of the cities that actually lives up to its billing. It is overbuilt, disgusting, brash, tacky and filled with idiots, however that is just what most people expect to encounter there.

I think Lubbock, Tx is the most overrated cities there is in the world. There nightlife, shopping and museums are not what i expected it to be.

Also, if you drop your guide book, take a wonder and just pop into the first restaurant you fancy (preferably off the beaten track) you can eat very well without spending the earth.

Oddly enough though, having done both Auckland and Sydney in the past couple of weeks, I actually prefer Auckland as a place to chill out for it's people and generally pleasant vibe (perhaps this is one of world's more underrated cities)?

Yeah, I love that kind of vagueness...

Reminds me of the story of the guy that called United, and asked for a ticket from Melbourne to Oakland... he meant Melbourne Australia to Oakland California... but the United agent thought he MEANT Melbourne Florida to "Auckland" New Zealand...

And there is a true story of someone who boarded a flight to Auckland, that thought it was to Oakland... oh dear.

And someone on this board recently posted something about "LA"... don't know if he meant Los Angeles, Louisiana, Lan Chile Airlines, or something else...

The Shanghai she has shown me is one of breathtaking architectural diversity, great cultural and literary traditions, and high social cultivation during many crucial periods of history.

Unfortunately most visitors don't see that side of Shanghai.

I read two books about Shanghai before I visited, so I had a pretty good historical understanding of the city. But what I saw in my three-day visit matches the "souless, etc." perspective you describe. The city just doesn't seem to have any charm.
