I vote for any resort in Mexico. I can't think of a more brutal way to spend a vacation than to be in a place like Cancun....a bunch of Hard Rock Cafe's, Planet Hollywoods, and Marriott's. Yes, it's close. Yea, it's cheap. Yea, it has decent beaches and water. But, I would rather wait and go somewhere else!

LA! By far!

Paris. Sorry. Perhaps I was all Musee'd or Churched out by the time I arrived.

Just where in Texas are you from, anyway?

Just curious as to where in TX someone who was disappointed with Paris would be from. At least you're from somewhere nice. :)

Dublin is also another overrated one.

LOL. Okay. Here is what got me about Paris. 1. Hype. We all get it and I was not immune. For many travelers Paris is larger than life. Me included. But I am NOT a museum person and Paris is home to the best. I will not lie and say I did not resent my friends for dragging me to the Lourve (sp??). I really wanted to see the catacombs and DID see the graveyard where Sara Bernheart was buried. But honestly - I had previewed every major church in Europe before my visit and was burnt out.

2. Cafes. - long story short - I'm broke from that trip. Send money. lol

3. Hotels - either really expensive or dumps. We got a pricy one for free (miles) but it still wasn't that great.

4. The subway system. I'll let that one go.

Regardless - as tourists I'm sure there are things I missed. But in all honesty I wasn't over the top. But that is just me and my specific views. If I go back in the future the catacombs will be the first stop.

You are always welcome to Austin - but I'll bet it ain't that popular to make it to an "overrated" list. :):D

Didn't you ever marvel at turning a corner and seeing something so beautiful that it left you breathless?

Yes I did. Dom Cathedral in Cologne. London churches, European castles.. I was overwhelmed on arrival to Paris. It is all good... Regardless of my feelings Paris doesn't suck...

Good to see this is in the spirit of the OP's contribution.

Don't worry about mentioning why. You may have even visited. ;)

(You didn't have fun in Dublin?)

El Paso, I don't find the appeal

I have spent a week in Paris (perhaps on more than one occasion) and never set foot in a museum or a church and had a marvelous time. Can't say that I never went to a cafe, however. I agree that it is outrageously expensive for Americans currently, but we rent an apartment and usually eat several meals carrying in or eating street food. I could be content spending all day, every day, just walking and sitting in the parks and reading. Paris can be very reasonable if you want it to be. To each his own. :)

Austin, btw, is more likely to be on an underrated list or, at least, a most surprising list. I don't equate Texas with pretty, but Austin is just that.

Unless you have friends in a particular city and still had a crap time I don't see how people say a city is over-rated. Does anyone have the current ratings?:)

Now as far as my hometown of Toronto I wouldn't visit it as a tourist as a priority. Toronto is highly rated as a place to live not to visit and as for it being boring to live here I can't believe the posters who have such incredibly exciting lives would even have time to post on an internet message board like FT. But then I love going to Berlin and someone posted that was boring and over-rated so each to their own.:p

I think that many Americans, especially those who don't travel that much (and not that far outside their own country) expect way too much from Italy...

I love Italy but it's not like the paradise most Americans think about when they hear Italy...
