I was at a hotel in Capitol Hill recently and the man in the room next to mine came in about 11 pm, obviously back from his first ever visit to the Hill. He called his wife to tell her all about the excitement. Fine, but he was so loud he woke me up. And he wasn't on the room opposite my headboard, but on the far side. I put up with it for a minute (hey, I'd just come back from a reception on the Capitol too ) but when he kept going I started banging on the wall until he got the message.

I would argue that #2 and #3 are, at the least, common courtesy and not controlling at all. If you think about it, #3 is the same as #1, except the voices are from persons present, not on TV.

I was stunned and had no comeback
I'd have told him to get on his knees and say his prayers ... the day of his death had arrived.

I despise people who treat hotels like they were at home. I always seem to get the room next to some moron who yells and horse-laughs into his cell-phone late into the evening. I now make it a point to ask for another room if I find a doorway to an adjoining room in mine. That cuts down on a lot of potential noise.

Nope. No beating up on old people. Yikes!

Everything else I agree with ^ Yes, the inter-doors are amplifiers. Man I think I have heard everything possible that can go on in a hotel room.

So, what then do you do when you're awoken @ 1am by the couple in the next room doing...well, what couples DO...by her shrieks & the repeated, & very rhythmic, banging on the wall of the headboard?

Several options:

1. Ask to join.
2. Put a glass between one of your ears and the wall to help amplify the sound.
3. If you are a techie and have a connecting door, slave a fiber optic cable to your camcorder and slide the fiber optic under the door.

Actually this has probably happened to most of us. When I get woken up like this I simply call them on the phone and tell them that people in the hallways can hear what they are doing. This usually kills the mood of the coupling couple.

One of the reasons why I like Homewood Suites so much is that the rooms tend to be sound-proof. Very little noise comes in, and more important, little noise gets out

My evil friend figures out what room number they are in & either rings the phone in the room (only if it shows NO CALLER ID as that would defeat the purpose) or calls the hotel & asks to be connected to that room. Hang up just as they answer the phone & repeat as necessary!

I think that BamaVol was advocating summary execution rather than beating up. So that's OK then

No,no!

Respect the elderly, even if they are exhorting social security payments out of you.

2. No letting guest room or stairway doors slam, at anytime!
3. If arriving to your room late with other guests, keep your voices down

What a sad commentary that you suggest that common etiquette is so often ignored that things such as you listed above should be made into a set of rules.

Next time you experience a lout who does the above, call the front desk. If you're staying in a hotel which respects its clientele, one phone call to the front desk will end the problems you are experiencing.
