Using logic like "the rule is stupid" or "I was going to do it in a minute anyway" doesn't apply. What the people in front of me were doing was against the rules as far as the FA who told them to turn off the phone, which was not a PDA or Blackberry but a Sprint cell phone I believe and I shouldn't be attacked for making sure the rule was enforced.
Ahhh...so YOU are the one going 55 mph in the left hand land on the freeway at any given time...

I take it you ONLY cross a street in a crosswalk, too?

That's okay right?" She shot back, "You can't store it in the seatback!" Ugh. I shot back, "I'm NOT storing it in the seatback, I'm storing it down there [pointing] in my laptop bag underneath the seat." She gave me a dirty look and walked away. Guy across the aisle said, "Christ...what's her problem?" I just shrugged my shoulders and continued on with work on the laptop for another 10 minutes or so, until the doors were finally shut and then I powered it down.

Obviously this FA does not have enough legitimate tasks to perform and should have been given several more assignments to occupy her time.
Clearly this FA has forgotten that it is you the passenger who pays her salary.

You should have said "You first, dear."

Not the exact situation, but similar. I was on a DL BE flight, sitting in row 1, when we were delayed on the tarmac--- about a half hour or so. The good FA's kept the pre-departure drinks flowing and consequently yours truly had to desperately use the bathroom. The realization dawns just around the time the captain makes the announcement that we are finally ready to depart and that everyone needs to be in their seats. I waited, and waited, and waited but the plane didn't move. Finally, I had to go, the feeling not made any easier by the realization that even if we started taxiing at that time, it would probably take another 15 mins to take off (this was at JFK AND if we were lucky)! One of the FAs moved to do something, so I quietly got up and asked if I could use the lav. She called the cockpit, and I was told it was ok.

While I was in, the aircraft started to move and the captain began making announcements to the effect that we were now really ready to go. So basically my being in the lav didn't change any plans.

It took another ~45mins, before we were airborne.

Do laptops power down instantly when the power button is pushed?

I also did not read all the replies so this may be repetitive, but if you want to shut down a BlackBerry right away (or Laptop), just take out the battery. I've done this many times over many years and have had no adverse effects.

Not gonna happen to my laptop. I'll shut it down the proper way; y'all can wait.

I was on a flight this week and when the FAs were giving their safety announcements the person next to me did NOT, as instructed pull out the safety information card and follow along!!!!! As you ALL know, 'FAA regulations require that passengers comply with all lighted signs, placards and crew member instructions!!!!!'

I was FREAKING OUT!

So I rang my call button and told the FA that this rule-breaking joker was compromising my safety and the safety of the entire flight and demanded that she make him pull out the safety information card and follow along!

Thanks to my heroic action, UA 7942 was a safe flight.

God bless! I see we have evolved.

This is what is known as a character arc in writing. You start at one place and end in another, and during the journey, you change!

So with that said I still think kicking the backs of seats is childish.
You have arrested people for talking on their phones??? Were they calling an Al Qaeda cell??? I sure feel safer with FAMs arresting people "for less".
