I'm not a huge fan of Germany so 1 city there would be plenty for me (waits for the torrent of abuse from the Deutsche-lovers!!! )

Think about location... Paris & Amsterdam are pretty close together, as are Rome & Venice (duh! ) so why not spend a week in Frannce/Holland & a week in Italy?

I could take or leave Barcelona TBH - it's been over-touristed and is a right little hotbed of petty crime to boot. But if Gaudi floats your boat, then it's the place to go. Personally I love Madrid & Bilbao more, although it would be bloody cold in Bilbao in winter

Trains & buses in Europe are great value - esp. if you're under 26 & can avail of the cheapo student fares. Also the beauty of using these forms of transport against our old friend Ryanair is that you actually arrive in the middle of the city you want to visit, rather than 90 mins & a coach trip away!

I know somebody slated Brussels in an earlier post, but I'm rather fond of it - the architecture is beautiful, it's not as commercialised as Paris, the food is good (as is the beer... ) & a side trip to Bruges would be lovely

I've been fluting around on www.skyscanner.net - the map facility is great for seeing which LCC's fly where & you could do this itinerary...

Birmingham-Amsterdam - www.bmibaby.com
Bus/Train from AMS to Paris
Bus/Train from Paris to Barcelona
Fly from BCN to Rome (FCO) - www.vueling.com
Bus/Train from Rome to Venice
Fly from VCE to Berlin - www.hlx.com

Does this sound like what you want?

You seem to do a lot of backtracking with this itinerary. For example, is there a need to fly from Rome-Brussels then back to Italy again before going to Paris? Less backtracking saves money!

So if we start in Birmingham you could fly to Paris, then take the Thalys high-speed train to Brussels (1hr25) or Amsterdam (4hrs) or even stop off in Brussels before going onto Amsterdam (2hrs40 from BRU-AMS). Then you could fly to Rome on Virgin Express which flys from both BRU and AMS to Rome FCO.

From Rome to Venice (4.5hrs) take the Eurostar Italia train - not to be confused with the Eurostar London-Paris service - before flying onto Frankfurt/Berlin or wherever in Germany (or you could cut out Germany altogether if you feel you don't have enough time) and finally returning to the UK. That'll give you at least 5 cities to fit dates around.
