The minority?

On Saturday, the Marine Corps held the third annual "Marine Corps in Central Park" day in Rumsey Playfield. It was a PR/recuiting/Hug-A-Marine sort of event. There were a couple of APCs, some weapons displays, a rock band playing etc.

I was passing by and poked my head in both coming and going about an hour apart in the middle of the afternoon and I have to say that the enthusiasitc majority you speak of was pretty hard to spot.

Standing up at a ball game is nice, but I doubt that the number of NYers willing to sign up and fight this war or send their kids there is breaking any recruiting records.

I don't know what part of NY you're in, but I'd hardly call NYC a pro-military place.

(Come to think of it though, I agree with whoever said above that this thread hs nothing to do with travel and doesn't belong here. My bad. I bumped it instead of letting it fall. Sorry and add me to those who think it should be moved or closed.)

Unfortunately, I do not have acces to post in Omni yet...otherwise I would have been happy to post it there.

I was fired up about what happened on this flight...especially since the seats were empty, it wouldn't have cost DL anything. Furthermore, I was disappointed that the other passengers couldn't have waited 90 seconds for these two soldiers to exit the aircraft first.

When we arrived in the baggage claim area, I saw something I will never forget - the excited screams and tears of a mother hugging her son to welcome him home.

This provides both an object for public glorification, as well as sharp warning to possibly restless citizens that the power of the state stands close at hand, ready to use its great potential for violence.
CSB,

I have given up my seat on a bus for an old woman before, doesn't mean I idolize old people, it means I show respect. Giving up a FC seat on a flight doesn't mean I want the 3rd Reich in the USA, it just shows a little respect and appreciation to a couple of guys who have come back from war.

Using the word fascist in any way when refering to the US military not only insults the millions of men and women who have fought to defend your freedoms, but even more so, insults the memory of the millions of people killed by true fascists.

The very notion of blindly calling every troop a hero is nonsense. What about those "troops" involved in the ever growing catalog of abuses--from minor and petty bullying on the streets, to full-blown crimes, to actual war-crimes? The perpetrators may not be a majority but they certainly are proving to be a noticeable minority within the ranks of our beloved troops.
Just curious - how did you determine that the soldier you upgraded was not part of the "noticeable minority"?

Some expectant mothers later become part of the "noticeable minority" that abuse their children. How should I determine which group they're in before giving up my seat on the bus?
