This provides both an object for public glorification, as well as sharp warning to possibly restless citizens that the power of the state stands close at hand, ready to use its great potential for violence.

I have given up my seat on a bus for an old woman before, doesn't mean I idolize old people, it means I show respect. Giving up a FC seat on a flight doesn't mean I want the 3rd Reich in the USA, it just shows a little respect and appreciation to a couple of guys who have come back from war.
Using the word fascist in any way when refering to the US military not only insults the millions of men and women who have fought to defend your freedoms, but even more so, insults the memory of the millions of people killed by true fascists.
