Why are German Hotels so...
reasonably priced? You can always seem to stay at a top hotel like the VierJahreszeiten, Regent or Excelsior Ernst for under 200 euro/night AND get an upgrade free. Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, all reasonable. Such hotels would be twice the cost in Paris, Amsterdam, Vienna, anywhere else in western Europe. And German hotels have always been reasonable. I should also add that I find the standard at German hotels to be superior to that of other European hotels.

Honestly, I have no idea, I think there are just usually enough hotels so that hotels dont get thru with overpriciing.
And if you calculate it into DM... 400 Marks for a hotel room is a ****load of money! And yes, many of us still do those conversations....

The economy is not very good in Germany. Companies try to safe .. less trips, meetings ... avoid pricey hotels etc.
Next, too many (new) hotels - Berlin is a good example. And also high Euro. Today you pay $ 1.25 for one Euro. I can still remember, when I paid only $ 0.88 for one Euro.

Are you travelling by yourself? For a single traveller requesting a single room or a double for single use, the rate can be reasonable. But add a second person in the room and the price goes up by at least 50%. Whereas in France, the room price is by room, not by occupancy.

For instance with Hilton, if you are a Diamond member (maybe even for Golds, I don't remember), you always pay the single rate and the second person stays free.

Examples 8 Nov 04:
Intercontinental Berlin from 162 / room / night
Vier Jahreszeiten Munich from 212 / room / night
Hilton Frankfurt from 280 / room / night
etc.
In general it's a question of the slow german economy and too many hotels around making for very competetive prices.
But you should see the prices for example in Frankfurt when there is any sort of trade fair etc. on - 300% increase is not unusual
