Many, many years ago CSA even flew Prague-Jakarta (with several intermediate stops) using a TU104 (but my 1978 OAG already shows the flight using an IL62).

Here's the 1966 timetable, which does show the Tu104 with a whole range of oddball intermediate stops. Not only did CSA fly to Jakarta, but Garuda came into Prague as well. I doubt they were headed for the beach at Bali !

Finally in the 1980s someone said "Ooooh, looks like the West German DM currency symbol", and so they were all changed again back to DDR-.
Close... but not quite. :-)

Firstly, it's actually the ITU, not ICAO. Aircraft registrations are deemed to be radio callsigns and are based on ITU country codes. That's why you get things like OO for Belgian aircraft and PH for Dutch ones.

Until the early 1980s the ITU codes for West Germany were DA to DL while East Germany had DM to DT (DU is the Philippines, I can't remember who has DV to DZ)

In the early 1980s the German Democratic Republic was allocated its own distinctive ITU country code - Y2. I remember this well because I was a radio amateur in those days, and those new Y2 callsigns caused quite a bit of a stir.

East German aircraft registrations should have changed to Y2 then, but for some reason it was decided to follow the example of the Soviet Union (whose aircraft registrations started in CCCP) and use the abbreviated version of the country name instead.

That's great, WHMB, thanks! The TU104 had limited range, so the many stops make sense - along with the political needs of the CSSR. And the Garuda Convair 660 is very interesting too.

A bit of a correction: GA operated a CV 990 Coronado.
One route I like on the timetable is MS (Egyptair) flying a De Havilland Comet from Cairo to Prague.

I appreciate the OP for creating a very interesting thread! ^

Check this link to the first Deutsche Lufthansa (later to become Interflug) Timetable in 1957: http://www.timetableimages.com/ttima...h57/dh57-6.jpg

This seems to suggest that fares were charged for Interflug service from Berlin to New York via Amsterdam however, there were no schedules to support these fares.
