me too!
I definitely don't think 'transit stops' in airports should count...
countries that no longer exist: East Germany, Czechoslovakia
more than transit stop but less than overnight: India, Monaco, Sweden, Mozambique, Zambia, Morocco
(odd to break these out but they are on the original list: Vatican City, Gibraltar. Seems like the 'occupied territory' should be separate too)
I'm going to Colombia next week so I will have been on all continents except Antarctica Not planning to go there, brrrr.
I don't like the idea of racking up countries - another notch in my lipstick case. If I want to go to a country, it's because I want to SEE it, visit it, not just to say "been there, done that, got the t-shirt"....but I have to admit that my little list makes me happy.
- USA, Canada, Mexico, Antigua, El Salvador
- Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, France, Spain, Czech Republic, Ireland, UK
- Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Egypt
- Turkey, Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan

Thanks to modern technology, you can "pin" all your places on a map with a doohickey they have on Trip Advisor.
Here's mine (also in the sig, but that'll change):

Looking at it graphically like that, you do get some idea of biases and patterns, especially if the person has been at it for a while (for me it's about 95% done in the last 18 years).
Europe and Australia were both "nibbled" through mostly one-off special air deals and trips to 1-2 cities rather than a grand tour through. Have also never driven from one end of the U.S. to another. Polynesia and Micronesia were mostly award trips maximizing stopovers. Still lots of white space to cover (with NW and Aeroflot, lots of the USSR is theoretically in play!)

Happy to report I'm now at 44 countries, new additions are Morocco, Slovakia, Lithuania, Andorra, Latvia.
Will go to Israel, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil later this year.
And I might add up 2 more to make it 50 in total.

My original post from years ago, plus some new additions.
A rather weak list, but it's a start
belgium
canada
denmark
france
germany
greece
mexico
netherlands
swithzerland
saudi arabia
italy
ireland
uk- scotland, wales, etc
us of course, alaska & 40 or so other states
Edit: 6/08
czech repub
panama
costa rica
australia
new zealand
singapore
poland
japan
spain
Some are multiple trips, and time spent in each ranges from a few days to a couple months to a couple years. FT has really enabled me to see so much more than I would have otherwise (and to get out of the back of the bus).
Next: Latvia/Austria/Germany (Oktoberfest) 9/08 and Thailand/Hong Kong/Cambodia 11/09

42/50 US States
Canada, Mexico, Jamaica, Barbados, Grenadines, USVI, BVI, Puerto Rico, England, Ireland, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Vatican City, China, Japan
Adding: India, Egypt, Jordan, Hungary, Estonia, Finland, and Sweden in 2009, possibly Honduras and Dominican Republic as wel
2010: South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Iceland
Probably have 32 countries in the bag by 2010, unless I can get a SA trip to see Argentina, Uruguay and Chile.

Noticed you've been to Irbil, Iraq. When did you go and did you write a trip report for this trip? Am contemplating a trip there to complete my "axis of evil" tour (Iraq, Iran and Nth Korea)
