What a fun topic; it's fun to see all the places people go. Here's my list:

USA
Canada
Mexico
Bahamas
Cuba
Iceland
England
Ireland
Spain
France
Germany
Belgium
Luxemburg
Netherlands
Morocco
China
Mongolia

So 17 countries and 48 US states, plus Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands. Around the US I usually travel by Greyhound or Peter Pan. Yeah, I'm like that.

27-30 depending on what counts, and I'm probably forgetting something

USA, Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, Panama, Brazil, Canada, UK (including Scotland), Ireland, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Vatican City, Spain, Portugal, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Barbados, St. Barts (does that count since it's a French protectorate?), American Virgin Islands (does that count?)...

And all the lower 48 (I think) and Hawaii...

It does amuse me that US based posters have to set out the number of states as though they were countries too. If you've been to the 48 lower states and Hawaii, then that's one country.

It does amuse me that sometimes UK based posters tend to argue that Scotland, Wales and England are seperate countries That is also just one country

At 93 visited here, will be visiting 100th next summer

Given the sheer size of the US, visiting a state is almost like visiting another country.

By the end of 2009, I'll have 21 countries under my belt.

I don't think they do - that's more something that Americans do when they have been to the UK. Unless you can point to counter-examples on this thread.

Yes, the USA is huuuuge. It's the 4th largest country in the world and is over 50% of the size of Russia. It's even slightly bigger than Brazil.

Ah, but the U.S. is--or was intended to be, at least--a loose association of separate sovereign states!

That may have been the intention, but it certainly isn't the reality today. A long time ago that was also the intention for Germany, but I don't see many people pretending that the various Bundeslaender should count separately. Australia also has separate states and territories. The UAE comprises many different emirates. Ghana has many kingdoms.

No, the separation of the USA is simply done so that some people can persuade themselves that they are more widely travelled than they really are - especially on Facebook applications that tell you what percentage of the world you have visited...
