Baggage MIT (missing in transit)

Baggage missing in transit - a phrase that strikes terror into the hearts of all frequent travelers. I don't know any travel warrior who hasn't been through it at least once. And every one has a Tale to tell.

To kick it off, here are a couple of Tales from my own knowledge (they're on my personal web-site because they're too long to post here on a BB)

Hope you enjoy these - and I look forward to reading/hearing your experiences.

better than this... Tim Gard and Steve Kissell wrote a book entitled "Just Plane Funny". Good stuff regarding everything most people complain about re: airline travel.

Mr. Tim Gard has a large rollaboard with a full-size sign on one side that states:

"This is not your bag. My bag has this big sign telling you this isn't your bag on it. This bag belongs to TIM GARD and is not your bag. This bag belongs to TIM GARD (and then address and ph#...)"

Every bag has a 100% chance of being delayed. Bags are rarely, if ever, lost forever.

OK, here are a couple.

I'm on a cheap ticket NUE - FRA - DFW - EWR / JFK - FRA - NUE. The bag did not make the EWR to JFK transfer in time for the flight. It was delivered the next day by taxi, and the day after, I had an apology letter in my mailbox. Times have changed since 1987.

On a BSL - FRA - DFW leg, my bag did not arrive at DFW. I contacted the ground staff. "Yes we know about it. Your bag was not loaded at BSL because they load the priority bags last, and there was not enough room for all of the baggage. The ground crew made an error. So it was flown to LHR to make a connecting flight to JFK, in order to connect to IAD, and then to DFW, and it should be here in two hours. We will deliver it as soon as it arrives." They did not know that it had been held at customs at JFK, so I got it the next day.

Arriving in Japan sans luggage (again - it became my speciality for a while). First I knew of it was when I was paged so fought my way through the queue at the handling desk to be told they hadn't loaded my luggage at AMS (KLM regulars will be shocked to learn this was with KLM), but that it was on a flight to Seoul, and would arrive in Osaka that evening. "Excellent" I said, fairly impressed with that. They would deliver the bag the next day. Rather less impressed with that idea. I needed suit etc for meetings the next day, and communicated this to the KLM person. Oh, but to get the luggage to me that evening she would need to lay on a special car - I didn't have a problem with that - and speak to the Station Manager - I also didn't have a problem with that, and even suggested speaking to him myself if she thought she would have a problem (waving a shiny piece of plastic the airline had sent me). She very hurridly said that would not be necessary.

Baggage arrived at the hotel that evening. Important lesson learned in being polite but insistent with baggage staff.

I checked in some bags SIN-AMS-CPH-GOT-FRA. I was connecting to TLV and SQ in SIN couldn't add the segment, but I had around 7 hours in FRA to organise it anyway. In CPH, my bag didn't seem to come out of the hold. Once I got to FRA when it didn't come out on the carousel I had it traced by LH. It seems that it missed the connection to CPH from AMD on SK, so it was rerouted to GOT on KL. The only problem was I had already left GOT and was in FRA!

I was informed that there were a number of flights from GOT that my bags could be put on, in order to connect with me on my flight to TLV. They Telexed GOT, but my bags never made it . They said that my bags would be put on the next FRA-TLV flight, so when I arrive in TLV I should call up LH and found out when it will arrive.

Of course when I arrived in TLV and contacted LH about my bags I was told they knew nothing about it, and my bags had not been put on the next TLV flight. They were put on the one after that, and arrived about 24hrs after I did. the only problem was I was going to a function. Luckilly i had my suit with me on the plane.

All this seems to reinforce my own belief that you need to have everythnig essential with you on the plane/in hand luggage. If it's in the hold it's a maybe

(sorry if my original link doesn't take you to the Tale any more because a new story has gone up this week. But you'll find the M.I.T. Tale in the archive)
