Internet connection without an ISP
My issue regarding connecting to the internet at a hotel, etc. is that I use a cable modem for high speed internet use at home. When I recently took a trip to New York City and tried to connect to the internet at the Marriott, I could not. I didn't know what to do and it really was not that important so I didn't press the issue. But I would like to know for the future; how does someone like myself log on if they don't have a dial-up ISP (AOL, MSN, etc.)?? Thanks!!

1) Make sure that your cable account doesn't in fact offer a dial-up account as part of the deal. Then, there may be "roaming" numbers that you can use to dial-up.
2) Get a $4.95/3 hours/month AOL account for such situations.
3) Get a Netzero free dialup account (although it'll drive you crazy with popups and the number of free access points/numbers has declined istm)

I bought a plan with budget dialup (http://www.budgetdialup.com). It's great, because I have no monthly fee, it's just prepaid hours. Perfect when you're a road warrior.

well, you could stay at hotels that offer in room, high-speed internet access.. Or, get an 801.11b card and subscribe to tMobile HotSpot and find a Starbucks.. Or seek how free 802.11b access points..
I'm not sure if cable companies add on dial up access capabilities, but I know it's done with DSL service, either via your local telco or someone like Earthlink. They do this for exactly the reason you need.

The Courtyard by Marriott next to LGA has a high-speed Internet connection in every room for a mandatory $3.99/day fee.
All you have to do is plug in the white cable laying on the desk into the back of your computer where you would normally put a netword cord (whatever the right name is for the thing, you know, wider than the telephone cord jack).

access4less.net $4.95 a month dialup all you can eat. NO popups, excellent spam blocking.
access-4-free.com $6 set up charge, 10 hours dialup per month free, $1.95 per hour thereafter. No popups. Did I mention free?

If it's a very irregular need, you could also have some AOL setup disks with you that give you a bazillion free hours the first month.
Then cancel.
Repeat again with a different user name as necessary.

I'll second what the others have said. Check with your Cable company to see if they offer dialup accounts as part of the deal, many DSL and Cable companies do.
Carry an AOL setup disk and sign up when you need to (or any of the other copmpanies offering free setups)

Five or ten bucks setup, then 10 hours free dialup per month. Above 10 hours it's a dollar an hour up to ten dollars a month maximum.
Access numbers in a lot of cities, or you can just program a Sam's AT&T calling card number into the modem dialing string and then connect from anywhere in the US for under 3 cents a minute.

Totally forgot until I was looking for something else on their site - ATT offers prepaid internet access, you buy a block of minutes for as little as $10 and use them whenever you want, no monthly charges or anything. Good for a year. Details are at https://www.consumer.att.com/prepaid...net/index.html , the small print is below
$9.99 for up to 500 Internet Service Minutes or up to 125 Internet Service minutes with 800 number access. Telephone access to reach the Service (including, local, long distance or 800/888 facility charges) as well as other taxes and surcharges, may apply. Pay phone service providers may require another form of payment for local access calls. Internet Service usage and 800 number access time is based upon U.S. domestic calling and will be billed in one-minute increments, with partial minutes billed as one full minute. International rates will vary and may be higher than domestic rates and are subject to change at any time. CD's are not refundable or exchangeable unless defective. Expiration dates of the Software or Refill Card minutes may vary, but typically you will have at least a year from the date of purchase or from date of refill to use up your minutes. Check your packaging or if you have discarded your packaging, call customer service at 1-888-671-2391 to determine your specific expiration date.
