With such a cosmopolitan set here on FT, I wonder whether any FTers have ever been on Air Force One?

I have. The current 747-2 version as well - not one of the old ones in a museum somewhere.

Of course, Mr. Clinton was not on board at that the time. And you only asked if anyone here had been on board, not "flown".

I listened to ATC (Seattle Center and the local tower) a couple days ago as Marine One transported the President out here to RDM, then he took off his in 757 (Air Force One), I believe to Seattle. Very interesting listening to all the other planes put in "holding" positions, or diverted to other airports. The security units (Huntsman One, for example, a surveillance helicopter) were also on the Tower frequency doing their thing. As Air Force One took off and contacted Seattle Center, I noticed they got whatever altitude, and whatever bearing they wanted. I've always wanted to hear Air Force One or some other important plane on UA's channel 9, when I'm up in the skies. Hasn't happened yet...

Yes, the restrictions that air force 1 puts on the air traffic system and other aircraft is more than a little annoying.

Not sure what other prominent aircraft their are besides AF1. I guess hearing a concorde (like, "speeedbird one heavy") would be pretty cool.

Personally, I prefer getting to hear and see fighter jet traffic. Their intentions and actions tend to be a bit faster paced than the stuff I'm doing, like watching formation approaches & touch/gos with incredible climb performance. "cleared visual approach one seven left and you're following two f18s that are gonna to be arriving and departing prior to your arrival caution wake turbulence contact tower one two one zero good afternoon"

You did not see AF1, you saw a VC-25 (There are two of them). At the same time AF may have been a modified business jet, fighter jet, or any other fixed wing a/c that the President was on. If he were on a rotary a/c it would have been (I believe) Marine One.

Actually, no, it has nothing to do with the type of aircraft but only who is operating the aircraft.

Since the Air Force generally transports him, that's where the name "Air Force One" comes from. "Marine One" is operated by the Marines. If he was on an Navy aircraft, it would be "Navy One."

A non-military aircraft (private, airliner, etc) would be "Executive One"

VP has "Air Force Two," "Marine Two," "Executive Two," etc.

I've had my chance to see Da Plane before. Not airborne mind you, but rather when it was at an 'electronics' service station where I, ahem, was working.

Sadly, there was no dance floor.

If I'm not mistaken, the lack of Mr. Clinton onboard means that you've simply been on-board one of the presidential aircraft, but NOT on AF1. Unless yours was a Bush-era visit.

What hfly meant was that the VC-25 becomes AF-1 only when the President is on board. If the aircraft is flying empty, it's not AF-1. At the same time, any military aircraft that is carrying the president becomes <insert-military-branch-here>-1.

How many planes are there that look like that (with the big United States of America on the side)? After I landed in Moscow in late Sep 2001, we passed one as we were taxiing to our gate.

I was responding to this part:

It's a moot point anyway. Technically, it could also be argued that the plane isn't "air force one" even with the president onboard until it makes the initial radio call for IFR clearance. Until then, it's the tail number of the aircraft.

When people say "air force one," you know what they mean.

doubleflyaway: There are tons with a similar design/paint scheme. I see them all the time on the ramps at private FBOs at commercial airports.

The VP usually uses a C-32 (modified 757-200).
