Lock or no lock ?

Should I lock my check-in item?

TSA suggests that you help prevent the need to break your locks by keeping your bag unlocked

In some cases screeners will have to open your baggage as part of the screening process. If your bag is unlocked then TSA will simply open the bag and screen the bag. However if the bag is locked and TSA needs to open your bag then locks may have to be broken. You may keep your bag locked if you choose but TSA is not liable for damage caused to locked bags that must be opened for security purposes.

Do a search on the FT Security Forum. There's a big thread there. You can search threads that I posted too.

In summary, for now, buy one of those use-once locks. I got mine from www.securityseals.com. Then, write your politician expressing how STUPID and UNCIVILIZED the current TSA policy is.

Also, add in the letter/email to your political representative that if TSA were trained properly in the use of the screening machines, the need for opening cases would be moot. Unless, of course, there is a real need to get into luggage.

If no chemical is present, why is there a need to open (let's say) a golf club case? TSA might be better than the private security in the past but I am beginning to wonder about this.
