Using your computer as alarm clock?

My trusty travel alarm clock finally conked out after all these years.

Does anyone know if Windows XP has an alarm clock feature? Since every computer keeps track of the date and time, I figure that if Windows doesn't have this feature, somewhere out there is a freeware/shareware that enables you to use computer as an alarm clock.

For times when I really need to wake up and I don't want to rely on the hotel wake-up call, I'd like to have a back-up.

Thanks,

I would never trust Windows XP as a reliable back-up for an alarm clock. I'm sure that applications exist if you Google for it, however.

Do you have a cell phone or PDA or some electronic device that you carry with you? Those can usually be used as good, reliable, alarm clocks.

My cell phone is considerably more reliable then I would consider a laptop to be in the alarm situtation. Big clock for the Palm is a decent alarm, but the Palm really can't generate enough noise to wake anybody up.

There are thousands of shareware programs out there to do alarms, you could even use the task scheduler to open a music file if necessary.

Do it with Calendar (part of Outlook)

Put an appointment in there for the time of the alarm call. Read help about "Set an appointment reminder". Set time before appointment option to zero minutes. Choose a really long sound to play. Turn the volume up on your computer to max.

Then lay awake all night wondering if you did it right .....!

I wish I could remember to check the alarm clock every time I check into a hotel room. I cannot tell you how many times the alarm goes off at 5am, because the last guest set it and the maid probably bumped it to the alarm position while cleaning. It is always set to some horrible music.

The worst part for me is that if the alarm is set to 4am or something, I'll wake up and turn off the alarm but won't remember to disable it the next day, so it happens the next morning again.

I use my RIM 950 to wake me up.

Here's one drawback of relying on technology: Our firm held its retreat in Arizona this weekend. One of my associates set her BlackBerry to wake her Sunday morning for a spa appointment. The BlackBerry automatically set itself back one hour to account for the change from daylight saving time to standard time -- but Phoenix doesn't observe DST, and she was awakened an hour too late.

I just use my trusty IPaq. It is certainly loud enough to wake even me up. Of course, you still have to remember to set it.

EVEN WORSE is when the hotel has thin walls, the room next door is now unoccupied, and the alarm goes off in there at 5.00 am and keeps going for the next 15 minutes. Oh, and if you ring down to reception, by the time the porter gets around to coming up it will have just switched off and you feel like a idiot.

Alternatively, if the room is occupied the occupant switches it off straight away but then gets up and has a thunderous 15 minutes under the power shower, which has the same noise-carrying effect.

Er, wouldn't you need to make sure your laptop didn't kick into energy saving mode and go into standby??

Personally, my Nokia 6210 mobile does quite nicely.

Whats wrong with going back to low tech and buying a good old fashioned "windup" spring loaded alarm clock. Mine works well for me in the middle of Alaska without the worry of batteries, powercords, or adaptors.
