Is the slowdown here? I was talking to someone at a suburban Boston Marriott who says that they are at 30% occupancy today compared to virtually 100% midweek last year at this time. He also mentioned that layoffs are looming throughout the northeast region.

I hear you, I am in Doubletree Club in Las Vegas, the hotel seems to be doing okay, since this is Vegas.
However, when I was in Clarion Chicago, the hotel is at a very popular spot and I was able to extend my stay 3 times, which would be almost impossible during the boom times.
I heard that there is a big layoff in my company, everyone is scared.

Not in Baltimore. For the past 2 weeks and this week, the Marriott Waterfront has been packed, packed, packed.
I had to use my Platimun guarantee to get a room for 2 weeks straight.
Tuesday or Wednesday, they had CHOPPERS landing and taking off from the roof of the adjacent parking garage for some of the guests. No idea who they were or where they were going.
A fellow consultant tried to book this property for next week, and was told, "Sorry, full up." He's 6 nights away from being Platinum...ouch.
Anyhow, things are booming in Baltimore. Don't know why.

I think the Sheraton San Jose cut staff in anticipation of a slowdown. But the slowdown hasn't really happened and now service really sucks at this hotel since they are short-staffed.

I spent yesterday with some CO pilots who were saying the crowds (or lack of) at airports and their flight loads are a leading indicator for them of where the economy's headed ... and lately they say it hasn't looked good. Most of their flight loads have been down - except, they said, to the Bay Area.

Was chatting with the business sales manager of the W New Orleans last night, she said occupancy rate was under 25%. A quick visual check this morning revealed that there were no newspapers outside any of the other doors on my floor, so I suspect I was the only guest on that floor.
Having said that, they've been running close to 90% - 100% occupancy for the past month, with the combined conference, Jazz Fest, and French Quarter Fest traffic.
