What are "Sleeping Runs"

You all heard of Mileage Runs and what they are.

But I suspect some of us have done "SLEEPING RUNS!"

(Before I go on.. spare the leud remarks for rec.travel.com or any other site!)

SLEEPING RUNS are where you are trying to get elite or requalify in your favorite hotel program. Or you are trying to get bonus points in a particular hotel program offer (the Fast Track from HHonors, Starwood's Free Fridays program, etc.)

Some ways to do it:

*Book cheap rates and stay at one of the hotels one night.
*Check out of one hotel one day and check in the next day at another within the same hotel family.

In fact I'm doing a sleeping run in February, staying one night at the Courtyard by Marriott in Jersey City for one night at a cheap rate (fourth stay) and oen night at another Marriott to get the five stays and the 10K bonus.

Curious to know if any of you have done "sleeping runs."

Unlike Mileage Runs, you get to stay in one place, you don't have to travel far, you get a nice comfortable (or heavenly bed) and earn frequent sleeping points and Double snoring miles.

Happy Snoring all!

Nah. I don't want to be too blatant. For example, one weekend last month I spent Friday-Saturday at a Hilton-family and Saturday-Sunday at a Marriott-family property. Also, I paid for the stays with different credit cards.

See my similar post of today in the OMNI(Beat you by approx. 30 mins!!!) concerning arguments over moving.

If anyone cares to answer my query here, I would appreciate it!!

Great topic!

Back when I used to try to maintain Hyatt mid-level as well as Marriott Platinum, we used to do a show in Schaumburg, IL. The Marriott & Hyatt are quite near each other.

Hyatt then only counted stays for status; didn't matter how long or what you paid. Marriott was counting roomnights.

The show was at the Hyatt and had a special convention rate. The Marriott's best rates were just on the weekend. Well, for several years we stayed at the Hyatt Thursday and Sunday nights (TWO separate stays toward status, both at convention rate) and the Marriott Friday and Saturday (two nights toward our 75). That way we maxxed the status benefits while minimizing the cost.

"Service" should be a noun, not a verb.

Oh yes, LexPassenger and I have done a few otherwise unnecessary Marriott nights in most years to top up our Platinum.

We once drove from College Station to Austin, TX (about 2 hours) and back the next morning to get our 75th Marriott night - there was no Marriott any closer, and it was the absolutely last night of our year. The night before, we'd been booked into the Memphis Marriott, but after driving through a tornado (close enough, anyway; we are still here to tell the tale), we arrived about 11pm to find NO ROOMS, not even for Platinums, and were accomodated at the Omni down the road. (It took us a long time, but Marriott also finally coughed up the $200 "walk" compensation.) Had we known then that Marriott counted the "walk" as a Marriott night, we wouldn't have had to make the trek in Texas.

DOC 2 BE - perhaps women do more packing and unpacking on the average than men? As you can see from LexPax's post, some of us females go along with the check-in/check-out bit, if there are good reasons.

That was logical Lexpassenger. I should be paying more attention to my hotel "mileage".
Thanks

Yup, I need one stay at the end of last year for Starwood. I was going to just book the Sheraton near my house, but I ended up making a weekend in DC out of it (and getting my Amtrak Guest Rewards bonus).

I tend to try to get my qualification done early so I can relax later in the year. For instance, last year around mid yr I had a four night stay in the SNA area. I stayed at four different Hilton properties in the area - The Hilton airport, a Doubletree, a Garden Inn, and another Hilton. A real pain, but I got four stay credits for it. So everytime I have more than one night up until around June, I'll go to the trouble to stay at different hotels.. the exception being conventions where that just doesn't work.

I did this about three years ago when I moved to D.C., but home was still in Jersey. I would fly to DC on Monday and stay in 4 differnet Hiltons on four differnet nights. Did this for about 5 weeks. Made Diamond real quick!!!

In November, on a trip to SO FLA, I did a 3 nite 3 hotel chain, spontaneously.

Went to SoBeach Mariott, then up to West Palm Beach and FtLauderdale for a Hyatt and Hilton stay.

I hadn't done them before, but the Hilton Gold promo changed that.

In January, I stayed at the Boston Airport Hilton for Saturday night (got in at midnight), then went to my regular Wyndham assinged through Priceline at 10am and checked in for the other four nights.

In two weeks, I'm splitting the two nights of hotel for my trip to LAX between a Doubletree and a Hilton about a mile apart. For an extra 29,000 miles... it's worth switching hotels!

I hate to tell you this, but if you're talking about the Megabonus, you need "nights", not "stays". So, there's no benefit in changing hotels, unless you get bored easily.

Is this a different promotion, Catman?

Could these also be considered a variant of the "Catnap"? And if on one of these Sleep Runs, you happen to down a bottle of Sam Adams, would you not be having a "Catnip"? [My appologies to Lenny Henry.]

I think my comrad on the AC Forum, EMPRESS, has one of these Sleep Runs planned for Vancouver later this month, hopping from one to another Hampton Inn and then to a third Hilton, to take advantage of cheap C$ room rates and the 50K fast-track to Gold promotion.

I guess I did a couple of these two years ago. One was a single night stay at a local Crowne Plaza so I would reach 20 nights for Priority Club Gold. Hardly worth the effort, for all one gets in this program, but...

The other was actually just a local Westin stay. The Edmonton property was celebrating its 25th anniversary and offered rooms for a very special C$25 per night rate. Who could resist? At check-in the clerk advised me that I might not get SPG points for this stay, but a few days later they did post, both as points and as a stay for elite status.
