My Passport is almost full and I was wondering where to get the extra pages. Thanks in advance.

A friend of mine recently had it done - no charge. Also, the next time you get a new passport if you request the extra pages in advance, they will add them when the passport is issued at no charge (saving you the hassle of adding them later).

After having added pages to my old, 24-page passport, I requested the 48-page version when the old one expired. Now the new one is filling up quickly. Can pages be added to the 48-page passport? Form DSP-19 doesn't address this question, so the logical answer is yes. Has anyone actually done this?

In the old days (circa 1960), they used to supply an accordian page with adhesive that you (or the Embassy/Consulate) pasted to the end of a page in your passport, and that folded out to give an additional 12 pages (6 pages, two sides each). I wonder if they still do something like that?

yes you can add the 24 page addendum to the 48 page passport. I've doen this twice in the past and there's been no problem.

I looked up the above mentioned form. It talks about mailing the passport into the office. Can I have the pages added while I wait at the Seattle or Washington DC offices? I live in Seattle and will be in DC next month. Thanks.

in my experience, they kept the passport overnight in order to insert the new pages (why, I have no idea). My appointment was in the afternoon; I don't know if they would have been able to do same-day if I had visited in the morning.

I had 2 24 pages inserted into my passport at the American consulate in Bridgetown, Barabados this past year. I only had to wait 30 min while they sewed in 2 books. Yes go in the morning and be out in 1/2 hour!

I Fedex'd mine in and paid to have them rush it back. I think I got it back two days later.

My recommendation if you need extra pages is to go through one of the visa services. At least in SF, they get priority service at the Passport Office, and can actually get it back for you same day.

If you try and do it yourself in person, you will still have to pay the rush fee and you'll have to deal with the appointment system which can be troublesome.

Like an idiot, I had my pages filled up with train stamps from/to the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria. Of course, that was ages ago, long before I found Flyertalk and travelled by more legitimate means.

That's good advice if you really need the passport ASAP and value your time, because you could easily waste a day or so waiting on line. On the other hand, these handling agents will also charge you a handling fee (in addition to the passport agency's standard and rush fees). It depends what you value more.

That said, it is definitely possible to get a new passport or new passport pages in the same day, as long as you show proof of onward travel within two weeks (at least that is the case with the NY passport office). In New York, the system has improved a lot since I got my first passport 11 years ago but the location of the passport office moved from Rockefeller Center to a random West Side location that is a lot less easy to get to. You can actually make an appointment nowadays(although all that means is that you won't be waiting on line for eight hours during peak season).

Also, the best time to apply through the mail for a new USA passport or renew one or add new pages is NOW. The worst time is to wait until May or June. I got my parents new passports in February two years ago through the post office/mail and it took only about a week.

DEFINITELY best getting it done abroad, IMHO. I always have some added when I notice, and generally in Hong Kong...But at any embassy or consulate, YOU, as a citizen of the US, get to cut ahead of all the locals in line and get served first (well, after other Americans), and like MRKEY's experience, never takes me more than a half an hour...And usually 15 minutes.
