DEFINITELY best getting it done abroad, IMHO. I always have some added when I notice, and generally in Hong Kong...But at any embassy or consulate, YOU, as a citizen of the US, get to cut ahead of all the locals in line and get served first (well, after other Americans), and like MRKEY's experience, never takes me more than a half an hour...And usually 15 minutes.
