How many of you get a stamp when coming back into the states?
On last 4 trips I've had, they didn't stamp me on the way back in. It really saves a lot of space.

I get an entry stamp virtually every time I enter the U.S., including the last two times, on December 8 and 22.

Must depend on the airport. Out of probably 50 entries into LAX over the last couple of years, they have never once stamped it on re-entry.

Quickly glancing at my passport, I concurr AlwaysFlyin...I know I've flown home through LAX a couple of times, and not one stamp...All of mine are SFO and ORD, which seems like every time I pass, they stamp. Just added my first non-US US stamp last week...Now have a US entry stating 'Aruba' in my passport because there you clear immigration before you leave.

If you use INSPASS you never get a stamp entering the U.S. (only at major U.S. airports) and you don't have to wait in line.

My INSPASS card has become all but useless since the machine in the United immigration area at LAX has been down for three months!

I like getting my book stamped when I come back. The key is you have to ask. If you don't ask, they usually don't stamp it.

seems to depend on the airport. At BOS, I never get stamped. Nor at JFK. At LAX, once out of three times. MIA, nope. YYZ's pre-boarding clearance, never (though last time they stamped my boarding pass).

At my hometown airport ORD, they always stamp incoming.

Like MBS PremExec, I have a cool non-US US immigration stamp from Dublin, where you pre-clear as well (didn't know they had that in Aruba now).

Doesn't it seem like the US immigration stamps should look more interesting? I mean, the Chicago ones don't even say "United States of America" or "USA" anywhere on them. I guess the UK is similar (just the name of the entry point).

The INSPASS worked fine for me at LAX on Nov 25th. It was turned off for aliens using the visa waiver program for a while, but the government extended the program and aliens can use the INSPASS again.

INSPASS has been working fine - i just got my card renewed at IAD last month. it is true that for a while if you were a visa waiver user you couldnt access the INSPASS system

as for INS stamps I too have noticed that ORD, PIT, and SFO almost always stamp while IAD and LAX rarely do.

From the Sunday New York Times Travel Section, a somewhat related article on applying forr/renewing passports. The time to do it is now...

PRACTICAL TRAVELER
How to Avoid Passport Woes
By BETSY WADE

HERE'S a New Year's resolution for you: Avoid last-minute travel hassles by getting out your passport. If it expires anytime in 2001, renew now, while the process is quick and involves no surcharge.

If your passport is nearing the end of 10 years, you may be surprised by recent changes in the renewal system. First, unless you have a ticket for overseas travel within 14 days, or require visas for a trip leaving not much later, you cannot renew in person, but only by mail. Everywhere but Hawaii and New Orleans, those who qualify for in-person renewals must get an appointment. Second, you no longer need to go to a post office for a form; you can find one on the State Department's Web site, www.travel.state.gov and probably print it out at home. Third, on Feb. 1, 1998, the age limit on a youth passport changed again, and young people may use a renewal form rather than a new-passport form if they got their previous passports when they were at least 16 not 18...

I had pages added to my passport and then promptly lost it. I got a new one through a passport agency and it took only 2 days in SFO.

As for stamps--I never got them in SFO or DFW, but ORD ALWAYS stamps. I have even asked to skip the stamp and they have done it.

Thank you for the information because I need extra pages and I was wondering the same question. Ka9taw, I just returned from London and Dublin and I didn't get the cool stamp at
Dublin. It could be because I stayed in London first, and then I went to Dublin. I showed my U.S. passport and they told me to continue. I got the London Heathrow stamp when I arrived but not when I left. The Chicago officers always stamp.

In a related vein, for visa reasons, I obtained a second US passport. This second one was issued for a period of only 2 years. On the back cover (under Amendments and Endorsements) there is typed language that says I may have it extended with the approval of the Dept. of State.

Has anyone had any experience with extending a passport such as this?

Thanks,
Greg
