Never thought about it, but I always assumed if you ran out of space (as a Canadian) you had to just get a new one?

Yes. The US is the only country that issues extra pages. Everyone else has to get a new one.

Interesting to see the press he received.
The article isn't very flattering, and makes him seem rather arrogant.

That said, my old one is 144 pages (48 + 4 extensions of 24 pages each)

Curious...
Last year I was departing Dhaka, and the Indian businessman in front of me put his passport in the security bin. It was very worn...and over 1 inch thick. At first I thought it was simply one of those mini Bibles or Quran, but then I saw the cover. I joked with him that that was the thickest passport I've ever seen. He said he travels internationally a couple times a week. I don't know how they got all those pages in there, or why the Indian government doesn't issue a new passport after a certain point.

Regardless, I kick myself for not asking the gentleman if I could take a photo. I try to fly politely, but sometimes I second guess myself.

Especially the part when he said people should travel more like him... while admitting he spends ~$200k per year for traveling with his family. Seems a little out of touch.

Decided to count the pages in my old one. 160 pages with at least one stamp per page.

I believe you simply because your post about the 52 page cap miraculously happened to go down as #52 in this thread.

The person has some history of affiliation with the State Department too. The additional page insert orders are going to be gutted by or before 2016

My primary ordinary US passport is going to go in for two inserts as soon as possible over this year and well before the fourth quarter of next year.

The Indian government attached old passports with valid visas to new passports. Quite distinct from page insertion.

The US has maintained a ten year general validity period for ordinary adult passports and doesn't seem as likely to kill that off than it is to kill of the additional page inserts -- but neither is scheduled for elimination even as the U.S. is an advocate against other countries allowing for page inserts or allowing for passport validity periods to be greater than 5 years. It's rather amusing when what's good for the goose is not considered good for the gander.

It used to be more common to see multiple passport books bound together than to see additional passport page inserts in non-US passports. It probably still is, for the latter seems to have largely dropped off the radar.
That was fast. :|

I found several news articles saying no more adding pages as of 2016, but the official government passport page says nothing about it and still shows the standard instructions.

Do you expect the US government to broadcast information of this sort in a timely manner?
