Eyewitness reports say the nose was up too high and the tail hit the rocks and then aircraft spun around.

Getting a better view of the approach end of 28L. The debris field extends all the way to the water. It appears that the primary debris is also right of the centerline. My impression here is of a terribly botched landing or a control issue. Wind could be an issue; it was variable from 170 to 240 at 7 knots per the METAR from about a half hour after the accident at 1156 local time.

ETA: from the pictures, it is clear that the tail break occurred at the rear pressure bulkhead -- the upper half of the bulkhead is still attached to the aircraft.

Indeed, wrong runway, so must have been an emergency.

I don't think they know yet, one way or the other.

Exactly what I wondered, did they find no power just as they needed it? My heart goes out the customers who have had to experience this and the ground teams who have to support them now as well as try to run the airport.

NYT journalist says not:

"@ravisomaiya: Official, who did not want to be named, said that plane was not making an emergency landing at SFO. All was normal until it crashed."

I can see a scenario where they declared an emergency because of a low fuel situation and then ran out as they were just short of the threshold but it makes me wonder what caused the fire.
