Obnoxious statement.

Ah, my bad. Gay cruise in Dominican Republic where 2 guys get singled out because they are acting gay on a gay cruise while the rest of first ever (!!!) gay cruise watch wrestling and Duck Dynasty TV tribute. Got it.

They got charged with indecent exposure. Period. Probably reported by another gay couple who weren't happy watching two fat 50 year old guys banging each other on a deck. Make it anti-fat and age discrimination case as well while you at it. My 2c.

I do not see the point of this thread. If you do not like a place or its laws, don't go there. Whining on an internet forum seems rather pointless. There are plenty of other great places and great people to visit in this world.

Because we love attention and want to be wanted. One thing to whine about not going on a gay cruise because you 'fear" to be persecuted for acting gay, but then pops "Amazing deal alert to Zanzibar" and for $400 you find yourself hanging out with them anti-[fill the blank ] bashers serving you cold Mojitos.

yup, look at the lenghty BAH 'deal' threads.
Moral objections to, what by all accounts is an oppressive regime, out the window!

So far everyone from FT has returned safely, and noone got arrested because of their religion or orientation. Weird, because reading some of this thread, one would assume immediate arrest on arrival there.

Yep, you have 3000 people get off gay cruise walking around island acting straight and only two who don't get arrested. Thats how it went down. Or people soliciting prostitution in a country where even bars named after Mother Mary and Jesus. Of course you get arrested. Here we go - straight people get busted because they are straight

I don't see the point of whining about not seeing the point of threads. If you don't see the point of a thread, don't click on it! If you click on it and THEN realize it's pointless, there's a "back" button.

Linked article says they were arrested for indecent exposure and buggery, and that they were seen and reported by someone on the dock, not on the ship:

Police Constable John George said police boarded the cruise ship and arrested the two men on suspicion of indecent exposure and "buggery," a term equivalent to sodomy on the island. He identified the men as John Robert Hart, 41, and Dennis Jay Mayer, 43, but did not provide their hometowns.

George said the men were seen having sex on the Celebrity Summit cruise ship by someone on the dock.
All this said, I expect the poster is correct that in most of the repressive regimes that happily arrest, jail, beat, and whip their own citizens for various moral offensives, tourists are unlikely to be. Still, many of us would prefer to not visit such places, out of moral distaste. That doesn't mean we expect anyone else to follow suit.

Also worth noting:
The pastor of Dominica's Trinity Baptist Church, Randy Rodney, praised the police for their intervention.

"I am very pleased that the police were called in and have arrested the people in question. I have warned about gay tourism and its implications for Dominica," said Rodney, who is a vocal critic of homosexuality and lesbianism.

The presence of gay cruises in the Caribbean has riled several conservative islands including Jamaica and Grenada, where anti-sodomy laws are enforced with strong backing from religious groups.

According to Cruisemates.com, no gay cruise lines sail to Jamaica or Barbados for fear of homophobia and possible violence. It said other places like the U.S. Virgin Islands welcome gay cruises.

In 2010, the Cayman Islands rejected the arrival of an Atlantis gay cruise amid protests from religious groups even though homosexuality is legal on the archipelago.

Who cares what they got arrested for! They got charged with indecent exposure, not for being gay. For christ sake, this was a gay cruise with 3000 other gay people on it. Somehow they were all just fine and didn't get charged with being gay.
As far as pastor goes, drive down to Northern Alabama and try going on gay cruise down the river. Let us know how that goes with local religious nuts. Few years ago Polk County Florida charged some couple under obscenity law for making home made porn videos. Lets boycott Florida because its dangerous for heteros to have sex there.

I wonder if those islanders would like to see witches and warlocks cruise boat parked. Or Justin Bieber appreciation club.
One thing I don't get is why you gay people insist that no-one can change someone being gay, yet you want to change other people's 1000 year old beliefs in to something else. Why?

here we go, the truth:

yes, to a point. If the transit is really necessary to get me to my destination, then i have no choice.

If there are another way to get to my destination without going through that transit, by all means i will do it

We've tolerated more latitude than would be allowed for posts outside the OMNI forum in order to keep the thread open in TravelBuzz. But we have posted several reminders to members to avoid extended OMNI-type discussions. As the thread has once again devolved into an OMNI-type discussion, it's time to bring the thread to a close.
