1. Deplane and follow everyone to immigration hall
2. Get in line for non-US citizens and do passport check
3. Head for baggage hall, claim your bag
4. Go through Customs checkpoint
5. Follow signage for connecting flights / bag recheck and drop your bag off
6. Head for departure concourse (C gates I think for United / LAX)
7. Unfortunately you do have to go through TSA checkpoint before entering departure concourse
8. Locate your new departure gate

I hope that makes sense. I've never understood why arriving passengers off international flights are required to go through US security here before entering the airside departure areas, it seems to me they're already pretty secure, but there you are.
The answer is #3 above-- once you've had access to checked baggage, you need to be rescreened. I believe that's a fairly consistent rule around the world.
