"Maybe you should learn to pack lighter"

Was the comment made to me by the F/A in FC yesterday.

I was the first passenger to board the plane in FLL. The 757 was one with AVOD. Knowing full well that my wheeled computer bag wasn't going to fit under the seat in front of me because of the video equipment under the seat, so I placed in the overhead like I have been doing since flying DL and then I placed my 20" rolling carryon in the overhead as well.

At this point "J" said to me that I needed to put my computer bag under the seat. I looked at her and said I can't because it won't fit with the video equipment and she delivered that incredible line..........

I know exactly on which planes in the DL fleet that my computer bag will fit under the seat in front of me. Unfortunately on the AVOD 757's it doesn't. I make every effort to put my computer bag under the seat because it's not uncommon for me it access it at sometime during the flight.

Guess I better start using my cowbell Diamond Mediallion luggage tags from now on so I won't get such an asinine comment in the future.

So being a DM overrides the one carry-on and one personal item rule?

Laptop back has always been my personal item. Mine usually fits under the seat but if I'm bulkhead it goes up top.

Mine as well, and I have a tanker of a laptop (17" + extra battery slice) but haven't had trouble putting it under an avod-equipped seat. It fits in the little carry-on tester thing at the gate.

Sounds like not the best choice for a laptop bag. If a personal item won't fit under the seat in front of you, it isn't really a personal item. I understand that most of the time it will.

The flight attendant's response wasn't the best choice of words, and I'd be pissed too. But that doesn't mean that she was not correct.

Sorry OP, the only such comment I have heard so far is from you. As a Diamond, you certainly know the rules. Seems to me you had two choices: Either gate check one of your bags or swap seats with someone where that nasty AVOD box wouldn't be in your way. In the end, you decided neither was good enough for you.

Last week I overheard a guy in 1C with a "carry on" that wasn't huge but was square so that it would not fit into the bin insist to a FA that it could not be gate checked because he had paid $2100 for his ticket. I was sooooo tempted to announce what my ticket had cost.

I've heard them ask folks to place one of their bags under the seat in front of them as a courtesy to other passengers, but I've not seen where this is a rule.

davetravels Mar 11, 2012 5:38 pm

How much compensation should the OP ask for?

I'm confused as to your gripe- this seems like a reasonable comment by the FA... And what's with the title of your thread in quotes - did he/she actually tell you that or is that for dramatic effect?

irfan23 Mar 11, 2012 5:40 pm

If that was what the FA said, that is out of line and unacceptable for a front-line employee of a major airline.

But, but, but . . . Don't you know who he was?????? :D

Inappropriate comment from the FA regardless of status.

3Cforme Mar 11, 2012 5:59 pm

Self-outing as a DYKWIA sighting.

If the title of this thread is a direct quote that lacks embellishment... shame on the FA.

As for the OP... I tire of the comments made by medallions who 'should' know better regarding storage space. Sometimes these are the same medallions who rag on kettles for trying to fit a yak into an overhead.
