Do you tip hotel managers?
We are currently staying at the Delano hotel in Miami. The beach and pool manager has been extremely kind and attentive to us and we were wondering if it was customary to tip managers.
Have you ever done it?
If so, how much would you tip for a 12 night stay?
Thanks for your feedback!

I never tip a manager nor an owner. I only tip employees.
The best way to show appreciation to a manager is to write a glowing letter to his/her boss.

What's his job? Did he do it well? Then email a note to the supervisor or chain personnel relations.

Cheers.

I don't tip managers. But an actual letter (not an email) can go a long way towards retention, bonus, promotion and the like.

It is the job of a manager to look after his guests. You should not be tipping him as if he is some kind of lackey.

No, don't tip a hotel manager. In many properties they aren't even allowed to accept tips.
I worked my way through college as a hotel bellman; if a manager had to help out in a traditional tip collecting capacity, ie., retreiving valet parked cars, delivering bags to guests' room, etc., he/she would distribute any tips received, evenly among the tipped staff on duty at that time.
+1 on writing a letter (or even a hotel comment card) praising the manager on his service. I worked at two Hyatts, and a very busy Marriott in Boston, and I assure you comment cards make their way back to employees who are mentioned in them.

Thank you for all your replies.
I will hence write a letter praising his professionalism. I had written a review on Trip Advisor and Yelp last year (we were staying in the same hotel and were as happy as we are this time around) and sent him the link (he was mentioned by his first name in the review) which he shared during a meeting. I think he also appreciated that.

I've since found out that some hotels file these types of letters in profiles.. and circulate amongst employees..

Keep in mind my experience tends to be at the higher end of the luxury hotel market. At a hotel where I stay frequently, or maintain a gym membership, or have a large number of special requests or last-minute suite bookings, I inevitably form a relationship with a manager or two. I will, every six months or after particularly useful service, offer a reasonable but not insulting tip. Typically (varying by country) these people are well-paid, salaried individuals who would be a bit insulted by a $5 tip usually reserved for a bell-boy. Generally $50/50Euro is a significant but not gaudy gesture of thanks. A bottle of champagne or another seasonal gift is also appropriate depending on how well I know the person. More often then not it ensures me continued attentive service from everyone in the hotel from the manager down, as well as the odd very significant (and otherwise costly) upgrade.
But, to your question. I think a pool manager is an in-between situation. I would imagine that you're not traveling to the Delano weekly on business, so the best course of action, and the most beneficial to the manager, would be to write a very kind letter of praise to the GM.
