just curious then, what is the job of non mgt hotel employees? Isn't it to look after guests as well only more specific to the task that they are assigned?

I don't have a problem tipping a salaried employee.. so long as they end up helping me with service from a traditional sense..

I do tip managers, both in the States, and especially in Asia. A couple of bills during a thank you handshake. The sum commensurate with his position, and usually only if he has performed above and beyond.

I would of never seen a hotel manager.

The sum commensurate with his position? So you tip him over $100? BTW, how would the hotel manager "perform" for you during your stay? I would of thought he would have nothing to do with guests unless they were mega high rollers in the 20k a night Presidential Suite.

Isn't the idea of tipping to pay people who are not paid a regular or high enough salary?

In the U.S., tipping a hotel manager is be an insult. It says the guest thinks his/her job is on the same level as those of tipped employees such as housekeeping staff and restaurant servers.

Outside the U.S., the "tip everyone in sight" culture is thankfully even less widespread.

The best thing you can do for a hotel manager is to mention them by name in comment forms.

In a way, tipping professionals such as hotel managers is an act of condescension. It implies that the person being tipped does a good job only to solicit immediate financial payback from the customer and not because they are simply efficient at their job or take pride in good work.

I never tip a manager, they are getting paid to be attentive and accommodating.
