Very humbling incident for the whole of mankind. Reminded me that the aviation industry has only been around for a little over 100 years. So all conditions prior to those 100 years were probably not considered during design...
I'd think that flying north of the volcano and then as far south into EU as possible would be an option. MSP>Stockholm normally goes north of Iceland so others could push there. Biggest problem would likely be the airports they could safely reach (depending on what is considered safe by who with the ash) aren't setup to handle that much traffic.
I've got some TATL flights in June - July. But doubt is slowly creeping in.
Anyways, 2010 has been a tough year, so far with so much turmoil - earthquakes and now this. hope it stops soon!

I saw this this morning.

The fear is that the previous 3 recorded eruptions at Eyjafjallajkull has set off the much-bigger Katla volcano. The last Eyjafjallajkull eruption was estimated to be just 0.1 cubic Km in volume. The 1980 Mt. St Helen's was 1 cubic Km. The 1781-83 eruption at Laki was 14 cubic Km. There's no reference to how potentially big Katla could be but it's bigger than Eyjafjallajkull.

Thought about that also, but the idea of rogue waves keeps me off of transatlantic ships.

As to where these waves are likely to occur, the number of reported vessels affected and deaths related to such?
When you have done a re-read compare "rogue wave" incidents to aircraft fatalities.

according to Euronews German air space was opened for 3 hours allowing a window of flights to arrive from the East as there was a break in ash cloud.
Lufthansa too is pushing for the closure of air space to be reconsidered... saw one of their test B747's on the news landing in Frankfurt.

Not only thought of it, but people are doing it.
Trains are packed Europe wide.

Hasn't anyone just thought to flying to Spain or Italy and then taking a train up to Northern Europe?

Oh.
Why do you say that?
FWIW AA has already canceled FLT 70 (DFW-FRA) for tomorrow.

I think all EU airspace to be reopened again tomorrow and it should have to bring back to normal operations. USA flight should have to give more extra sections due to stranded people are waiting for returns back home. So I cannot have to wait for much longer and I have go back home to PHX on Tuesday. What I should do something for extended stay in Switzerland for another days or not. Whether if USA airlines will resume normal operations back on TATL flight.

N830MH - are you still stranded in Switzerland? I cannot help you directly as you don't seem to have a pm facility, but if you wish to contact me to see if we can do something to help, please pm me. Sorry that there's not a lot of time left between now and Tuesday ...
From the current info, if you can get south to Rome, there seem to be flights operating, and there are good rail services including overnights from Zurich and Geneva (and Basel) via Milan if that helps.

I am also starting to wonder about my late May/early June trip to Europe. Hopefully they will have a better protocol for things by then, even if the volcano eruptions continue...but I am concerned. Just not sure what, if anything, could be done.

The eruption might affect me indirectly. My son and his mother are scheduled to fly OSL-EWR-TPA on Saturday to visit my mother, and I was going to fly down to be with him, but if the OSL airspace is shut down then, they of course won't be able to go. I'll miss his birthday.

i'm kinda glad my short eurotrip was uneventful just a few weeks ago
this little ash cloud could have easily screwed my JFK-AMS-CDG-MAD-MUR-MAD-BCN-LYS-CFE-ORY-KRK-LWO-KRK-ORY-LYS-MAD-CDG-AMS-JFK trip (most segments booked on separate itineraries, using plane, train and bus services... yikes!)

I'm surprised that churches and other Traveler's Aid type of groups haven't set up programs to help stranded Europeans find shelter while they're stuck here in the States. I have taken several trips to Europe and could not have afforded to extend my trip by several days because I wouldn't be able to pay a hotel for that. I'd welcome a guest in my home if I knew how to make the offer. European, in general, are very welcoming to traveling strangers. It seems like the right thing to do to help people in need. Has anyone heard of any sort of organization for this?
