Phones without the camera.

Many defense contractors do not allow cell phone with cameras into their buildings. Are there any 3G cell phones without a camera?

The local security officer makes the rules using "better safte than sorry logic". Many Govt agencies do not restrict cell phones with a camera, but contractors do. On one occasion, I wet to IDA (Institute of Defense Analysis), a Congress funded corporation that evalauates various defense platforms, and asked them if I should leave my cell phone with reception as it had a camera, they looked puzzled. They saw no reason why I could not take the cell phone with me.

Off the top of my head these GSM w/3G don't have cameras. Note these phone are older so maybe harder to come by:

Nokia E61
Nokia E51
Sony Ericsson M600i
Sony Ericsson G700

As for newer phones they are getting harder and harder to get without a camera. You should look into business phones, those usually have the option to not have a camera. I also know that some blacberry's like the 8800 and the new tour don't have camera or have a model without a camera.

Good luck!

Thanks maven808 I haven;t been able to find specs on these phones, but I suspect they don't work in the 1.7 GHz band used by T-mobile. What do you mean by a business phone? HOw or where does one look for a business phone?

There are only a handful of phones that work on the tmobile US 3G frequency. So, getting one with those specs without a camera is close to impossible.

Thats correct, all of the phones out for T-mobile 3G have a camera in them. I can't seem to find any unlocked phones without a camera either.

Your best bet would be to wait till T-mobile launches a 3G blackberry on their network. Usually there is blackberry intended for business users that does not include a camera.

Other manufacturers sometime release so called "Business Edition" phones that often times do not include a camera. Just keep an eye out.

I never understood the logic of the no camera policy. Cameras have gotten so small these days, it would be very easy to sneak one most anywhere - unless you are in the few locations that basically do a strip search of workers (saw something like this about the diamond industry - probably Discovery channel). There are also USB drives, phones with USB ports, e-mail and all kinds of other ways to steal data instead of taking pictures of it.

In my facility I did have to sign something stating I would not take personal photographs in the facility, but they don't have a problem with my blackberry. I did even use it to e-mail a picture to a supplier concerning a problem of a completly non-classified component.

The difference is that a smartphone camera can offload its photos remotely and in a matter of seconds. They can make photos without leaving any evidence behind.

Aside from the "business-oriented" Blackberry option, another choice is to just use a normal phone and buy a case for it that covers up the camera. Then just "forget" that you have a cell phone with a camera on it when asked.

Any agency/company that's serious about security simply won't allow you to bring in ANY cell phones or other portable electronics, and will use metal detectors/x-ray/etc to enforce that rule. If they are just saying "no cell phones with cameras" and not following up with any sort of physical search/enforcement, they clearly aren't serious about the rule.

Because they are locked or is there a frequency issue here?
