Netbook recommendations?

I feel overwhelmed by the amount of netbooks available - and I thought it was just the Eee PC and the Acer Aspire. I kind of want a netbook as a gadget, though I don't know quite what I'd use it for. Still, what are the pros/cons of the leading netbooks? Which would you get? Why?

Lenovo S10, purchased it becuase it has an Expresscard slot for my 3G modem, it has a fantastic keyboard and can easily be expanded with an internal Bluetooth adapter. $399 for 1GB ram/160Gb drive and XP.

I find the quality of the S10 to be much better than the Eee's or the Aspire One (which has a horrible mouse configuration).

I'd go to your nearest computer/electronics big box store and try them all. Get a feel of which keyboard works for you, screen size, etc.

Personally, I chose the Eee PC1000 for a variety of reasons that include super easy access to the RAM/HDD.

However, you may have completely different criteria.

I'm interested in this too. Mrs. Redbeard wants one that she can take out and about, use in a Starbucks, whatever. Anybody using the Dell model?

I've got an eeepc 1000 and i really like it. It's light, the battery lasts forever, and it's snappy enough to use. One big thing for me is that the keyboard is slightly bigger than other netbooks, so i can actually type with it.

I like the Dell, but they are not available with a hard drive, only SSD. Sadly I find 16GB to be too limiting for what I do.

Been 100% happy with the Aspire One - you get used to the trackpad configuration after about 10min, the keyboard feels very solid to type on. I have the 6 cell / 160Gb version. I take it anywhere I don't need my regular work laptop, even to write a few emails or surf the web from Starbucks, etc. and it's ideal for that. Works well with a USB 3G modem also.

I just purchased the HP 2133. Very nice so far. The keyboard is large enough to be useful. The screen is nice and bright. It runs Vista better than the older Sony semi-netbook I was using. The extra .5 MB taking the 2133 to 2 GB does make a difference with Vista.

I bought one of the $99 3G Acer Aspires at Radio Shack last week. It works well and the long-range wireless is very convenient...no need to find a wi-fi hotspot. The keyboard fits my hands much, much better than the small eeePC's.

Note that the $99 price requires a 24-month commitment at $60/month for the ATT 3G service. If you have a cellphone with available data plan it's likely that it's not a good deal, but that did not apply to me.

Wirelessly posted (dell axim: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5G77 Safari/525.20)

Definitely thinking of picking up a netbook on my upcoming trip to the US.
What is the advantage of Expresscard over a USB 3g modem, is it only that it protrudes less (and frees up a USB port)?
Can you use multiple carriers SIM cards in an Expresscard modem or are they carrier specific?

Does

One enthusiastic vote for the MSI Wind 462. Around $429 or so on Amazon. Great computer, very comfortable keyboard. 10" screen, 160 gb drive, 1 gig mem expandable to 2 gig, 6 1/2 hours battery time. XP, bluetooth, b/g/n/ wireless, and more. Around 2 1/2 lbs.

Yes. Several also come with a built-in Skype compatible webcam. The screens are ideal res for 72p HD video, too.

3G is slightly different, 3G USB stick is fine, and some versions have built-in 3G (eg the Acer deal through Radioshack mentioned above).

Does anyone know where can I get a Lenovo s10e in the US? Is it actually released yet? I am looking at the MAX package and not the UK s10e version.
(Full spec = 6 cell batt, 1.5 gb RAM 160GB and the smaller glossy screen). It is unfortuante they have to change the screen to a smaller and glossy one as I prefer the anti glare. I guess I can always get a 3M privacy filter over it?

Also on the subject of the Express Card 3G modem? Is this CDMA or the HSDPA? and where can we get this?
