Installing on another machine as we speak There was a queue at the Apple Store in downtown San Francisco when I arrived at 6:15PM. The queue was around the corner from Crate and Barrell for those who are familiar with the area. The makers of Parallels were handing out mints and coffee. Apple was handing out t-shirts.

I'm back at it again this morning.
finally got one machine working...kinda...at least boting.

I think there are a lot of great things about Leopard, and you can find them all over the web. I've started a list of ceveats (that anyone is welcome to add to or rebuff). Perhaps I should have started a thread here, I'm not trying to be self serving, but I am working with multiple communities...

My findings so far

I won't be upgrading this weekend. But that's because my copy doesn't arrive until Monday.

However, after reading about people having problems with machines not booting after the upgrade, I may hold off a few more days.

OT but maybe someone can provide info. I received email from mac.com on Oct 18th advising tha effective Oct 19th, isync would not work with panther on one mac and either tiger or leopard on another mac. No notice, just a brief FYI email.

Peeved for short notice and more peeved since some of us are using older macs that won't work with leopard, i.e. my G3 iBook (running 10.3.9). So now, I can't sync to my iMac at work, which is an older G4 running 10.4.x.

Tried to find on apple.com somewhere to lodge a formal complaint - anyone have any email addresses for customer service, etc. yea i know, will probably fall on deaf ears but i'll feel better after i vent

Thanks

I upgraded my Powerbook G4 and Mrs. RKG's Macbook last night. The install went smoothly (no surprise there, it IS Apple). Everything runs smoothly on both machines. We will play around with it some more today. The only thing I noticed that seemed unusual was the wireless signal strength showed to be slightly weaker on both machines.

Today I went to the apple store in ALB. I was going to throw caution to the wind and upgrade but when I went to the apple the store. There were a couple of people who were working with genuises who were having problems with their upgrades. So I got scared off and just left.

I did overhear the genius tell one of the customers to archive and upgrade.

Here is an article from MacFixit.com
They are recommeding a archive or erase and install instead of the straight upgrade.

Here is the real dirt on MacFixIt these days; it's just not the credible resource it once was. http://www.macjournals.com/news/despicable.html

I am constantly keeping up with Mac stuff, and it's been off my radar now for at least a few years.

ok, had my first issue but easily resolved by a genius in the Los Gatos, CA Apple store. I could not synch my iPhone after installing Leopard. I kept getting an error message that a plug-in was interfering. The genius found the plug-in and removed it. (I tried reinstalling iTunes several times with no success before going to the store). Now so far all is fine! (by the way I have no idea where the plug-in came from).

Upgraded already on Thursday, everything working fine except a bit of parralles issues, and boot camp issues. TimeMachine has taken a WHILE to run, but it had about 250GB to archive most likely.

me likey

Joking aside...things are going better with me and Leopard.
I'm working with about 12 macs in a pretty diverse environment. Single Sign On is working for authentication but not for accessing shared drives and I'm hearing from people that its wide-spread, not just me.

I have to say that 90% of apps work...but as we all know its that 10% that we rely on and will drive you nuts when its broken. So far I have not touched the PPCs, just intels and I can say that without a doubt the best success has come from a "wipe and install" followed by "archive and install" ... I have had no luck at all (IE won't boot) after a regular upgrade. Despite common knowledge that an "upgrade in place" is always risky, it is what apple defaults to so please take caution.

Above all else, back up! Backup your entire home folder and you'll capture your personal preferences, files, etc. For a more comprehensive backup you can clone your drive with something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper or simply make a copy of everything (it may not be bootable, but you'll have it). Then you can safely wipe and install...then copy over your user directory and you'll find most things as you left them.

I bought a refurb MacBook a couple of weeks ago and just ordered Leopard under the up-to date program. Should have it by Halloween.
