Yes, I was thinking the same thing after the announcement this afternoon. But there was nothing concrete beforehand, just some indication that the builds weren't doing too well so far. That does not a definite delay make. As a prediction, it was right on. Perhaps a friend inside?

yes
but probably not before XMAS - I sometimes like to make presents to myself (and hopefully some major bugs are already solved/updated by then).
currently on an iBook G4 that wanders from Uitikon to Wengen and back at least 30 times a year, my own airport (cable) at both sites, so that my (often Frequent Flyier-) guests and all family members (some of them with windows systems) can go online also (but they need my password).

i just upgraded goalie-mom's pb g-4 to tiger (10.4.9) about 2 weeks ago and was wondering if there might be any discount for those that recently purchased tiger. it sure would be a shame to have to shell out another $100+. there were coupons (as there have been with all the macs i've purchased) for s/w purchases/upgrades in the box but they are blank have nothing on them

I have no idea what they are for, all Tiger-upgrades since were free and without problem available online

Well ofcourse they are. Those are current updates of current OS X. Jaguar can't upgrade to Tiger without paying. Tiger can't upgrade to Leopard without paying. However - updates (as I would rather call them) within the OS X version you are using is free.

Emma65 is correct as the upgrade i did for goalie-mom was from jaguar to tiger and then downloaded the updates to tiger for free. i'm just hoping the $100 i spent to buy her copy of tiger will not have to be spent again when leopard comes out, hence my question 'bout the coupons

no contradiction on this - but the question remains: what are these vouchers for?

They've been putting those vouchers in the boxes of computers or OS retail packs for several years, and they have never in that time meant a thing that I know of. It may be in case they decide to offer an upgrade price, but at the $129 or $139 regular price (I forget which it is) of the OS, they don't offer an upgrade price.
I've seen dozens of those proof of purchase voucher things (there's usually a card with three of them, I think, something like that) from buying new Macs, and I've never needed one for anything.
There is always a cutoff date for a way to get the newer OS version, with a $20 fee for mailing you the DVD, but has not gone back in time for a period of months in many versions. The last couple versions basically it was only there in case you bought a Mac or the previous OS on the day of the new OS on-sale announcement or later. (There would still be lingering inventory of old boxes at third-party resellers and such.) The on-sale announcements have typically been "available today", so there's really no leeway. Buying the OS now wouldn't even have qualified you for an upgrade if it was released in June, based on past patterns, let alone October. Some will argue that this is lame, but I also look at it that the OS cost is relatively cheap. If they suddenly started charging $200-300 for the retail OS, then upgrade pricing would be in order. At $130, it's not that bad. They do give a significant education discount to $69.

I am just waiting to see whether I need to replace completely my iMac G5 (logic board died and I am going to have to see whether the repair is worth it). We should get 10.5 free as mrssimongr is a teacher in Oz and they have some deals so we will upgrade either our new intel core iMac or our old one - might also think about upgrading the iBook that mrssmongr has as well.
