Still looking for the "April then June now end of year" you mentioned at the beginning. Where is the source for this? The reports surrounding the most recent build only suggest that the rumblings we've heard about an earlier than expected release are incorrect.
I seem to recall the original release being noted simply as "spring 2007" so that goes right up to June anyway. I can't find anything that says there is a delayed release or suggests they need 6 months worth of work. The reason these notes are saying "not anytime soon" is that people were starting to expect a release by the end of March, even though no such timeframe was ever promised (at least as far as I remember).

At some point, typically 6 weeks or so in advance, the release date (or an approximate timeframe) will be given so that the Store can begin taking preorders.
By the way... There's no need to pay for expedited shipping. The preorders are always shipped out to be delivered the say of release. The only way to guaranty delivery on a certain day is for orders to go FedEx Air, so all orders are upgraded for free. This is how it's been done the last three releases anyway.
Note that OS releases often happen on a Saturday. Consider this when indicating a shipping address, i.e. don't ship to work if you're not there on Saturday. If the release is on a Saturday, shipments usually arrive to their destination before 10 AM. Believe it or not, previous recent OS releases have been a burden on FedEx nationwide, so that 10 AM delivery deadline could be a goal rather than a definite target. OTOH, sometimes a sprinkling of lucky orders arrive a day sooner, because a staged shipment accidentally gets processed too soon or something. The fraction of orders that arrive early or late is usually minuscule, and execution generally gets better each successive release. Fortunately, the entire operations and logistics wheel isn't reinvented each OS launch.
I can't speak to how it's happening now or when this go-round, and anything I've said about how it worked in the past one could glean from public sources. Just have to get that out of the way.

G3
Any more news on what the cutoff maybe for an older machine?
I have (2) very nice iBook G3's 900Mhz max 640Mb RAM...with 32Mb VRAM.
Some sites says that G3's will be out, others say maybe machines with less than 32Mb VRAM will be out, etc...

This is closer to a potential delay:
"For its part, Apple has maintained that it is on track to ship Leopard "this Spring." However, recent developer releases have raised suspicion over whether the Cupertino-based company will be able to meet that self-imposed deadline, as a number of critical issues reportedly remain in the software."
But there's no clearly stated push back of the release, and spring goes until June.
So unless you know someone at Apple and that is your source, we are left to wonder yet again why we should believe it's the end of the year.

If you have an iBook, you won't be able to get a comparable G5. Apple never made a portable G5 in its iBook or PowerBook lines. You can get a G4, with some good deals on factory refurbs on Apple.com, or go Intel. If you have any Classic (Sys. 9) apps that you're not ready to toss, replace or upgrade (if they have OS X versions), the Intel route is problematic, involving unsupported emulation software and a performance hit. Absent any of those, Intel would be the way to go.

I'm hoping that they continue to support the G3 FW machines, like they did with the OS X 10.4 build, if only to maintain the OS X Server I use for most of my server-side activities. I absolutely love the server package, but it doesn't require all that much processor power for what I do.
I plan to upgrade across the board, though, on the G4 PB, the Sawtooth, the B&W server and the MacBook Pro. Apple upgrades are generally flawless for me and I appreciate/use the new features once I figure them out... Spotlight alone was worth the upgrade to 10.4.
