New Microsoft Office Software

This morning I visited the Microsoft website to look at upgrade packages and it looks like they seems to be introducing something called Microsoft Office Small Business Management Edition 2006. Does anyone know anything about this new package?

I can see that it adds a small business accounting package to the mix.

I'm wondering how it may differ (other than accting pkg) from Office Pro.

And whether these packages are/can be part of preinstalled systems?

Can packages like this be run using XP Home w/SP2? or do I need to u/g to XP Pro?

Any and all advice and/or comments would be appreciated. TIA

it has been around for years

this SBA product has been around for years. Not worth it. Better to get a student / teacher additoin. You must KNOW a student or teacher somewhere, or even have one in your house, right!

can be loaded on three systems as well.

Small Business OFFICE has been around for some time, but SBA (Small business Accounting) is brand new and wasn't released till July. If I am not mistaken...

The SBA version includes an accounting program designed to combat Quickbooks and like software. I have not used it and thus I cannot comment on the program.

The other programs (Excel, Outlook, Publisher, Word, etc.) are the same. Unless you need the accounting software there is no need to purchase this edition.

You mentioned Office Pro. The only difference between Office SBE and Office Pro is Microsoft Access. Unless you need it there is no reason to spend the extra dough.

Either package will run on any version of XP whether it be Home or Pro.

If you happen to get this software as part of a new system make sure they provide you with the CDs or DVDs.

but I did notice- that is if I was going to talk about MS Office Live- that there was an announcement about beta testing on the office site....

That's exactly the reason I was mentioning it; need the Access program. So it looks like Office Pro for me.

I see that it can be purchased as an upgrade from Works (included with Home XP).

But will it let me install on both laptop and desktop? (I don't think so--and I surely can't afford to buy 2 pkgs ~$300/ea!!) Do you know if there is any work-around for this?

Open office

Open Office 2.0 has native support for .MDB (Access)

Can't beat the price.

If I remember correctly, Microsoft will allow you to install it on both a desktop and a laptop.

Yes, that is correct. Microsoft.com says "You can install one copy of Office Professional Edition 2003, Office Small Business Edition 2003, and Office Standard Edition 2003 on your main computer and another on your laptop computer for your exclusive, but non-concurrent use...."

While it does have .MDB support, there is not a Access-like program. It has an application similar to Excel that supports .MDB extensions but that is all.

Thank you; that's really a relief. Don't know why I didn't find that info when I was on the site.

I will have to read up here on network security stuff, also (as well as other pertinent info).

My thanks to all who participate in this forum (not just this thread)--it has helped me so very much and I am truly appreciative! ^
