I should have taken the advice of many on this forum - this phone is extremely frustrating, and I'm ready to dump it. I actually heard that it had been recalled by Cingular, but I'm on AT&T. I'm looking for advice on the right mobile to get next. My needs are: tri-band for int. use, easy to unlock, bluetooth, compatible with iSync, and preferably no camera. Thanks!

Options I'd go for would be:

The new Motorola MPx220 (currently onlu on Cingular I think).

The SonyEricsson T630/T637 or Z600

The Nokia 6230

Looking at the current ATTWS selection I think your options are:

The SonyEricsson T637, The Siemens S56, The Nokia 6620.

I wouldn't pick the Nokia 6820 as it's very slow and has a terrible display.

Sadly most phones nowadays will come with a camera...

I spot three phones there that won't currently iSync (MPx220 and the two Nokias). The only phone listed that fully meets the OPs requirement is the Siemens S56, but that's two or more generations old now (really nasty screen).

If the OP is willing to waive his 'no camera' requirement, then I would suggest either a SE T6xx/K700 or Z600 ... really depending on whether he/she prefers candy-bar or flip phones.

If the OP wants a 'smartphone', then the Siemens SX1 is also a possibility.

(Added: if the OP is prepared to take part in a little 'phone archaeology', models like the SE T68i and Ericsson T39-series phones also fit the stated requirements)

All three of these phones work with isync. As for the SX1, it isn't offered on ATTWS so the only option would be to purchase from a direct vendor, adding around $300 to the price, but would you REALLY want anyone using that POS keypad? K700 is the same thing, not available on ATTWS, so he'd be looking at around $350 over in the US.

Of the available devices on ATTWS the Siemens S56 is sadly the only one that fits the description. Yes it's old, and yes it's display sucks, but it's a reliable device, has great RF and a semi-decent UI.

Well, I know that the T6xx series phones and the S55/S56 sync with iSync as I've owned both of them. I haven't owned a 6620, but one of the main reasons for that is all of the reports I read from the net indicating it didn't work with iSync - do you have some different information? It's not listed as a supported device on Apple's page, and Googling turns up lots of complaints about the phone not being supported.

The 6620 is just an EDGE enabled 6600, and the 6600 is right on the isync page (http://www.apple.com/isync/). All Series60 phones are supported in isync at the moment, even the new Sendo and the Siemens SX1 and other series 60 devices like the NGage.

This is bad advice.

The short answer to this is "no, the 6620 is not just an EDGE enabled 6600". People should not proceed on the assumption that because the 6600 works with iSync that the 6620 will.

The long answer is that the 6620 uses a version of the Series 60 software that no longer supports mRouter access via the BT Serial Port Profile. This is the method by which iSync works, as at version 1.5 anyway. This is also the reason that the Nokia 7610 does not work with iSync.

I checked it out, and have to apologize, you are correct.

I have a pre-production 6620 here and it worked just fine, but it doesn't have the Series60 SyncML engine on it like the current 6620 has, to me it just seemed like any other 6600 I ever tried, but with edge radio hardware.

One can only hope that Apple implements SyncML into iSync as that would greatly increase the number of supported phones.
