I've tried it in the UK on "three" and in the Netherlands on KPN.
In my opinion it's only usefull for data, the whole video calls thing is silly, as is watching the tiny clips three has. I have no need to see a half inch stuttering clip of a football match.
When I tried it for Data with a PCCard it was awesome, ceretainly much better than GPRS.

What is UMTS?
UMTS™ (Universal Mobile Telephone Service) is a Third Generation (3G) Mobile System being developed by ETSI™ within the ITU’s IMT-2000 framework.
It will provide data speeds of up to 2 Mbps, making portable videophones a reality.

Do you need a special phone and contract in order to use UMTS?
Do you think we really need UMTS ... will it be a success in the future?
Thanks?

I joined "Three" one year ago, buying a 303NEC. A "videophone" very big and with a lot of bug in sw, and a small battery ( 1 day ) for 250 euro, with a super promo of two phones for one.
in May I have buy Motorola A835 ( 199 Euro with 150 of prepaid sim ).
It's work very good.
Videocalling is fine just at the beginning, and when you are far from home for see your wife or parents.
Data are very fast inthead GPRS, but very expensive.
Now in Europe other companies lanched UMTS services ( like Vodafone, etc ), and the service is going better than after but coverage need more grown.
I think it needs 2/3 years to have a largest distribuition.
In US 3G services are diffused ?
