Can the experts here confirm my interpretation of http://www.t-mobile.com/services/email/overview.asp please:
If I open a voice account with T-Mobile USA, even the $19.95/month basic thing, they include GPRS with access to ports 25 and 110?

I have not had ANY problems with T-Mobile GPRS access and closed ports AT all... ScottC... You may want to try this as well as you are on a real T-Mobile network, I'm on the VNO in Californa (T-Mobile shares Cingular's network). On the virtual network here in California, no ports are blocked.

Make sure you ask for GPRS WITH VPN access, that will get you internet3.voicestream.com as Access point and you won't have any closed port issues. internet2.voicestream.com DOES have closed ports though 110 and 25 are open but stuff like MSN messenger and AIM are closed.
Adding VPN to the T-internet plan is FREE.

ScottC hit it. Make sure you are on internet3 with the VPN plan. One thing though, at least when I switched to unlimited internet you needed a $39 a month or great voice plan to get the $19 data plan I as I recall. TMo can obviously clarify this. By the way, they have special tech people for data and they are pretty good. They have even helped me with some problems in programming a non-TMo phone which I dont consider them under any obligation to do. They went out of their way to help a customer (anyone in the airline biz lurking?

Thanks for the good technical information, but let me be clear: I'm not talking about data or internet plans, I'm talking about the "Free WAP" included with basic voice plans.
I've been searching on some other sites and I think I've found the answer (it's "yes")--e.g., this link on howardforums.

If you have the $29 Internet plan you also get voice for 20 cents per minute - if you use the Internet more than the phone this could come out to be less than $50 most of the time...

I'm a very light user of both voice and data, but I like the idea of being able to check and send short emails while traveling without eating into my voice minutes.
From further reading, it seems that the right way to do this is to add "unlimited tzones" to any voice plan for $4.99 a month.

says this "includes unlimited Internet e-mail and Mobile Web content". This seems a pretty good deal to me, and international roaming is just 1.5 cents a kb and a few tens of kb a day will serve my purposes.
Discussion on other sites suggests the tzones thing is only supposed to be used from the phone itself, but I don't see why I shouldn't be able to use my Palm as I do at present for CSD.
