Help with Wireless problem

I've got an 802.11b network in my apartment. No problems with that.

I recently purchased a Netgear 802.11 a/b/g card for my Gateway laptop. The card continually connected and disconnected from the wireless router, especially when uploading or downloading large files.

I returned the wireless card, thinking there might be a problem. Using an SMC 802.11b card with my laptop worked perfectly.

When I returned the Netgear card, I bought a SMC 802.11 b/g card. Same problem again.

I e-mailed Netgear and SMC's tech support. Both made some suggestions, but nothing worked. I'm still having the problem, and it's a real pain.

Any suggestions or ideas? 802.11b cards work fine in this laptop; but the b/g cards can't stay connected for more than a few seconds, especially during heavy transmit or receiving. It doesn't make a difference where I'm located, even being in the same room as the router. And it doesn't seem to be wireless card specific, as both the Netgear and SMC cards had problems.

Thanks for any help

d

Thanks for the link.

I tried all of the suggestions, and unfortunately, I'm still experiencing the same problems...

Any other suggestions?

I stick with the old solid "b" version as it easily handles any of my cable modem bps speeds, and I posess both Dlink and Belkin cards (I prefer the Dlink).

My few problems were handled by downloading and installing the latest drivers from the manufacturs web site.

Never, repeat, NEVER use the totally outdated CD that comes with the cards. Destroy it before beginning any 802.11x installation.

Is your card using an XP compliant wireless driver (e.g. Symbol stack) or does it have it's own user interface to control wireless?

I was using the SMC utility to control the card, but their tech support told me to use the built in XP one when I e-mailed them for help. So now I'm using that.

I'm still having intermittent problems with this as well. I think there's something with XP Pro that conflicts. I can get my wireless network to work just fine w/ XP Home and Win 98, but the XP Pro computer just can't seem to maintain a stable connection.
