Help with Wireless problem

I've got an 802.11b network in my apartment. No problems with that.

I recently purchased a Netgear 802.11 a/b/g card for my Gateway laptop. The card continually connected and disconnected from the wireless router, especially when uploading or downloading large files.

I returned the wireless card, thinking there might be a problem. Using an SMC 802.11b card with my laptop worked perfectly.

When I returned the Netgear card, I bought a SMC 802.11 b/g card. Same problem again.

I e-mailed Netgear and SMC's tech support. Both made some suggestions, but nothing worked. I'm still having the problem, and it's a real pain.

Any suggestions or ideas? 802.11b cards work fine in this laptop; but the b/g cards can't stay connected for more than a few seconds, especially during heavy transmit or receiving. It doesn't make a difference where I'm located, even being in the same room as the router. And it doesn't seem to be wireless card specific, as both the Netgear and SMC cards had problems.

Thanks for any help
