Time for a new computer... recommendation?

OK... I loved my Dell XPS 12.... but it just died.

The SSD is not responding at all.... and the GeekSquad said it would cost over $500 for an attempt to get the data.

Instead, I figure I would just get a new laptop.

I use mine for basic purposes.... when at home, I connect it to a dock to use an external monitor.

I use it for internet access, Microsoft Office use.... nothing high powered.

However, I want to get the big bang for my buck.... do like fast... and Windows 10!

NO MAC!

Suggestions?

Given that you are thinking about a 15.6" laptop to replace your 12.5" laptop. Is it safe to assume that weight and size aren't your biggest concern?

The Inspiron 15 looks like a good deal, but keep in mind that you have to replace the hard drive with an SSD if you want fast. Consumer-grade SSDs are now hitting $0.25/GB regularly.

We helped Sharon in this thread, where I recommended and she purchased this ThinkPad:

Amazon Amazon

How big of an SSD do you need?

Also...your data on the "bad" SSD might still be recoverable. When you get a new 'puter, you might be able to place your "bad" SSD into a USB housing and use software like Recuva (free) or DataRescue ($100) to recover files and/or repair the disk so it works again.

I'd consider the MS Surface if you want something that can be docked and also has good portability. It also gives you the Office software that you want.

An alternative would be to go for a Chromebook and never worry about data loss from your drive again - providing you have reasonable internet access to use the cloud like a regular drive.

I would buy a ThinkPad T420/T520 and put in an SSD. Cheap as dirt being four year old model but still nothing beats it esp at the current price point...

Not quite a T440s, but then again not quite $1800 to outfit it the same way either.

Hi everyone - I have deleted several posts urging the OP to get a Mac. Since he said up front he's not interested in a Mac, please keep it to PCs. Don't make me become Mean Mod Gfunk. I don't like that guy!
