The blog post mentioned voice being discontinued in Hangouts. I received a notice in the Hangouts app to switch my service to Voice for GV. The regulatory statement does seem odd since it references US and EU regulatory changes.

Could it have to do with some services having verified identified people tied to them and some being more anonymous? Could the regulations be meant to ensure that it is possible to track down two parties communicating with one another ? We’ve seen this in Asia where it is mostly no longer possible to buy a SIM card anonymously.
https://www.varonis.com/blog/ccpa-vs-gdpr/ A discovered violation of such a regulation can be costly, at least in theory. For those Asian countries where getting a prepaid SIM card anonymously is no longer legally allowed, some of them probably still allow roaming on a foreign SIM card that was anonymously purchased. |

The reference to US and EU regulatory changes is -- and I am just guessing at this point -- perhaps related to California in particular having put in place some regulation after California got inspired by the EU regulatory framework:

And how does. CCPA lead to a decision difference between voice in Hangouts and voice in GV/Fi?
I'm inclined to think its about the former, as it would reduce the regulatory burden/risk by diverting the company away (and divesting) from a product which the company thinks is less valuable to it longer term (or more risky due to older "infrastructure" for the product) and instead investing the company's compliance resources into a product it considers more valuable to it longer term and thus the one more worth focusing itself on when it comes to dealing with GDPR/CCPA compliance (and risks from compliance failures). Reading between the lines in the the blog link which TGarza put up above, it seems like it's indeed the former: the company wanting to focus its compliance resources (and concentrate on) risks for it's newer "infrastructure" and getting away from an older and potentially more risky older "infrastructure" when it comes to GDPR and CCPA-related "costs". |
Wait, Fi roams onto AT&T now?

T-Mo has roaming agreements with AT&T in some places. It is possible that you occasionally are on their towers.

Has anybody else experienced delays in billing this month? My statement closes on the the 7th and is still "finalizing". Usually takes no more than a day.
ETA: it was emailed to me this afternoon. |
After 2 years with Fi, I switched to T-Mobile with their free line on us promo. I have not been traveling out of the country this year, and Sprint merged with T-Mobile. There is really no benefit on Fi over T-Mobile, so basically I saved $30 a month and got unlimited data.

I switched to T-Mobile from Fi as well. I pay about 50 less a month, and if I ever do travel again, will just buy the data pkg. While I liked Fi, i really did not like the lack of iPhone support. The WI-FI calling that T-Mobile allows and Fi does not has become the straw that broke.........then I just got a free line, so now I have two paid lines and three free lines for 120 on magenta. I really like google but 50 bucks is 50 bucks. What I can say for sure about Fi, get off the plane, phone just works. Should be the case with T-Mobile as well, but have not personally tested yet. Looking forward to doing so! If I was traveling all the time, Fi would make sense with the unlimited data, but currently, T-Mobile won me over.

thanks, maybe one day I will be able to step off a plane in an foreign country again to test for myself!

Actually, as soon as the wheels hit the ground.
Though it's odd in some airports you get a signal in the tarmac or runway towards the terminal but as soon as you deplane, sometimes takes awhile to reacquire the signal. Man if they offered 1 Mbps free data roaming, since 5G is becoming more widespread, you might be able to get away with just the free data roaming for light use. |
I've been very pleased with Google Fi internationally...at least the last time I was able to use it. Maybe travel to the EU will open up again this summer.
The battery in my current Moto G6 Fi phone seems to last for a considerably shorter amount of time than when it was new (a couple of years ago). Performing the recommended battery-recalibration procedure hasn't helped, so I'm thinking about purchasing a new phone. Neither of the "designed for fi" Moto phones on the website can do 5G. Are there any indications for when Google Fi might start selling a 5G Moto phone, or should I go ahead and buy a 5G Samsung or Pixel? |
